Beyond The Silo:
Although Silo season 1 presented numerous riddles throughout its ten-episode running, one of its main concerns is the condition of the outside world. Apple TV+'s Silo revealed in episode 1 that people live in the constrained environment of the Silo since the outside world is poisoned. But the next episodes showed how Sheriff Holston discovers a livable environment outside when he ventures outside but nevertheless, for some reason, dies moments later, effectively reversing this discovery. Silo season 1 at its last scenes at last reveals what exists outside the subterranean metropolis.
When Juliette departs the Silo, she first discovers the same lush, green environment Holston observed upon leaving. She discovers, though, that the sight is too similar to what she saw in the Jane Carmody cleaning video after she sees a flock of birds flying in a V-formation in the sky. Her understanding of the outside world she is seeing—probably projected through the screen of her helmet—is improved by this resemblance. It is just VR simulation. Juliette soon discovers problems in her synthetic world but finds her way by sensing her surrounds.
The true significance of the ending of Silo Season 1
The ending of Silo Season 1 confirms that its plot exclusively covers Hugh Howey's original Silo novel mythology. Storywise, it raises moral questions about freedom and the illusion of free will. Juliette breaks free from the constraints of the Silo's dictatorial masters in the concluding scene of Silo season 1, but is she free in a world where human existence is not even feasible? Given how poisonous the outside world is, one also questions whether Juliette acted morally by organizing a rebellion with her defiance.
Juliette will probably discover a means to enter another Silo and maybe use the subterranean passageways to get back to Silo-18 in season 2. Still to be seen, though, how she will uncover the fresh riddles she comes across toward the finish of Silo Season 1. Given all that has to be untangled, the idea of another Silo season already sounds fascinating.
Why did Bernard Sent Juliette Outside in Silo's final scene?
As soon as Juliette challenges the higher authority of the Silo in season 1, she sealed her fate. Bernard and Sims had already determined to set her up by stating that she herself wants to escape the Silo when they initially caught her at the grain fields in the closing of episode 8. She breaks several additional Silo laws, though, after somehow avoiding her arrest, therefore her acquittal is almost difficult. The Ending of Silo season 1 shows Bernard wanting to throw her out as punishment, but his last comments imply his motives are considerably more profound.
Bernard informs Juliette in the last episode of Silo season 1 that every life in the Silo is valued and that her technological accomplishments in the down deep made her among the most significant people of the underground metropolis. Bernard's admission to Juliette implies he would even keep her in the Silo should he have a choice as he is not offended by her rebellion. He does not have any alternative, hence he orders her to leave the Silo. He understands that the people of the city would cease paying the Silo's rules any thought if she stays around after breaching every other law in the Silo.
Season 1 Ending Explained: Silo
While the ending of Silo season 1 is full with surprises, it also presents fresh riddles to prepare season 2. Juliette moves subtly between floors in Silo season 1's conclusion using the trash chute. She even tries to show the Jane Carmody film on all Silo screens thereby revealing the secrets to her people. Bernard stops her when he finds she is exploiting the chute by requesting police enforcement to toss large debris down the hatch. Juliette at last is caught, and Bernard grabs George Wilkin's hard drive and smashes it to bits.
Bernard deals with Juliette in the closing seconds of season one episode 10: he asks her to follow him and leads her through all he is aware of the Silo. Offering her some sort of closure, he even shows her a video of George Wilkins' last hours. Lukas is taken to the mines in the last scenes of Silo season 1 for failing to report Juliette when she had earlier visited him. Juliette says goodbye to her father meantime and gets a mysterious note from Martha. Juliette at last ventures outside before the Silo season ends.
The World Outside The Silo Is Dangerous
The barren images of the outer world verify that the air is really poisonous. It shows that Holston and Allison did not die as the authorities of the Silo filled their suits with poisonous gases just for profit from their lies. Their suits were purposefully made with faulty adhesive to allow in the poisonous fumes from the outer world, hence they perished. Holston and Allison made the error of thinking the VR simulation from their helmet is genuine, instead of realizing people cannot breathe the poisonous air outside the Silo. Fortunately for Juliette, she discovered other Silo secrets before she left.
Season 1 of Silo offers nothing about what might have contaminated the outer environment. But given how the show handles issues of human morality, corruption, and power play, it seems plausible that a human-induced tragedy wiped off the planet. Either a nuclear accident rendered uninhabitable or climatic change turned Silo's outside environment poisonous.
The Heat Tape Twist Explained: How Juliette Survives Outside The Silo
Martha leaves her house after decades understanding only she can save Juliette when she is caught by the Silo's enforcement in the last episode of Silo season 1. She sees Carla from the Silo's Supplies division and requests a favor. Moments later, Juliette gets a box of hush puppies from Martha accompanied by a note declaring: "You wanted the truth. As it happens, I love you. Not terrified. In supply, they are good. Martha's note attests to her having provisions meant to enable Juliette to survive outside.
Remembering Martha's words when Juliette eventually leaves the Silo, she understands that the Supply members who assisted her in putting on her suit sealed her sleeves using good quality hot tape and created airtight seal. Leaving the Silo, Allison and Holston passed away since their suits were purposefully sealed with faulty tapes. Suits were given to them not for protection but more for sale of the VR simulation lie of their headgear. Luckily for Juliette, Martha especially, had her back before she left the subterranean city.
