Fascinatingly, Brian Ashmore created a picture depicting Anakin and Padme together in 1993 that might have been their first. Designed for a card in the Topps Star Wars Galaxy 2 series, the Artwork shows Padme cradling an infant Luke Skywalker with Anakin hiding in the backdrop dressed in a black cloak. His form shadows menacingly like his armored form as Darth Vader. Given his customary stance on then-Expanded Universe material covering the prequel era at the time, George Lucas personally asked for the artwork to be removed from the set—not surprisingly.
The fifth issue of The Last Command's comic adaption would feature a portrait of Padmé Amidala, emulating the freshly cast Natalie Portman, before Star Wars: Episode I was released. Although these elements are classic for the Legends timeline, an image of Anakin and Padmé almost predated them.

1990s non-movie Star Wars publications were equally canon as the movies themselves. George Lucas aimed to minimize confrontation between Star Wars materials from other creators and his intended prequel movies. This explains why properties hardly showed events like the Clone Wars or Anakin Skywalker (before he turned into Darth Vader). Ashmore's Artwork would not fit the prequel movies since Anakin never saw any of his children before Padmé's death or through her prolonged cybernetic resuscitation.
In a 2008 interview, Brian Ashmore mentioned that a well-known Phantom Menace teaser poster will use his portrayal of Padmé's faintly shadow akin to Natalie Portman and Anakin's Vader-like shadow. Ashmore even questions in the interview (with great uncertainty) whether his artwork influenced Portman's casting or the Phantom Menace ad. In any event, Ashmore's artwork presents a lovely, sad, and menacing picture of what viewers of Star Wars could have imagined about the parents of Luke and Leia.
