Why Isn't Alia Atreides in "Dune: Part Two"?
You're right; it's pretty confusing! Alia is super important in the books and was just briefly shown in "Dune: Part Two."
Where Did Alia Go?
Well, if you read the books, you know she's pretty wild. Alia Atreides is a Reverend Mother, who becomes a super powerful leader! She was a huge player in "Dune" and even becomes the leader of the Atreides Empire. Anya Taylor-Joy was cast as Alia, and she did a short appearance in a dream scene, but that's about it!
Denis Villeneuve, the director of this amazing "Dune" movie adaptation, basically put Alia on pause for this sequel!
Is There Going to Be a "Dune: Part Three"?
- This is where things get crazy! You know those books were written by Frank Herbert? In his series, "Dune Messiah", Alia has a super crazy story, where she even ends up being possessed by the Baron! That's gonna be super intense!
- Villeneuve is going for some huge changes - for now! He’s got his sights set on bringing those stories to life but has even changed some key things for those big characters.
- They didn't say they weren't gonna bring Alia into the movie series at all! The dream sequence could be a hint of things to come in the future.
Is This A Major Change for The "Dune" Story?
You bet! It totally is.
- You gotta think, how is Alia’s whole arc going to work out without that connection? It is the Baron’s death, which happens in the books but the movie version had Paul Atreides doing the killing.
- Denis Villeneuve is still trying to make a ton of those amazing changes from the books to bring to life in the movie series, too. And those are major decisions for him because they can have a huge impact on the series moving forward, especially with Dune: Part Three!
Alia Atreides: A Complex Story
We know Anya Taylor-Joy is playing this character! It's really weird, because Alia is still a child during the events of the "Dune Messiah" in the book! And it'll be pretty interesting, since Taylor-Joy looks more like an adult.
It makes you think they will use the same actress, that they'll fast forward the Dune timeline or maybe we'll get a brand-new Alia, all together! This whole "Alia Atreides" story just might get flipped on its head. But for now, fans are hoping we get more info from Denis Villeneuve.
You might be surprised at how much Alia has changed how things worked out in those Dune books! If you love a story that is super detailed, these Movies might not get it totally right - so it might make more sense to dive deep into the books, those original ones by Frank Herbert!
