A simple conclusion might just be that Wes got killed because of his wealth. The character was known for owning Goat Island, which makes him an enticing target. If this doesn't appear plausible, Outer Banks is mostly known as a teen adventure, and usually does not delve too deeply into supernatural. In short, his death wasn't supernatural and it looks like it really has to do with a more grounded and tangible culprit.

There is the very real and terrifying reality that he may have been murdered to gain his possessions!
