This is the first live-action force tale not from a Jedi or Sith perspective.
Although Star Wars has lately included live-action narratives including the Nightsisters of Dathomir, they have virtually always acted as story antagonist. Two of the primary characters—both protagonist and antagonist—are originally from a coven of witches viewers eventually encounter in episode 3 of the series, hence The Acolyte is really unique. Unlike previous Star Wars, this new witch coven sees the Force in a rather different light—something not new on the screen but definitely fresh.
The third Acolyte episode transports viewers to the planet Brendok, where a coven of witches has been residing to stay away from entanglements with the Republic and Jedi. These witches assert to be persecuted all throughout the galaxy, and see the twins Mae and Osha as a gift to their coven as they were produced by the Force. Still, the Witches in The Acolyte do not really refer to it as "the Force."
Star Wars Books and Comics View the Force in Many Different Ways, but the Acolyte Brings This To Live-Action First Time.
The third episode of The Acolyte formally presents a fresh point of view on the Force and Star Wars overall. From the start of the Star Wars narrative, the Force has been fundamental in the episodic movie narratives. From those episodic films, several books, comics, video games, and more emerged, so broadening the Force itself as well as the Star Wars chronology.
Audiences are first exposed to the Jedi Order—or what remains of it—as well as the Sith in the first Star Wars trilogy Whether for good or ill, these two groups have essentially shaped how Star Wars movie and show audiences grasp the Force. In expanded Star Wars narratives, however, the Force is not just employed by the Jedi and the Sith but also by many other groups that interpret it differently; The Acolyte is bringing various interpretations to life live-action.
Comparatively to the Jedi and Sith, how the New Witches differ?
The new Witches presented in The Acolyte differ greatly from the Jedi and Sith. They think the Force is an energy field called the Thread, which links everything together, not in the same sense as others. Like the Nightsisters, they employ magical energy, but they characterize their skills as very unnatural - the same phrase Palpatine uses to characterizes the dark side. As at one point they even have a Jedi, this looks somewhat odd.
Like the Nightsisters, they employ magical energy, although they characterise their skills as very unusual. The Witches saw the Thread as a power attaching one to others in a spiritual and metaphysical sense, so tying one to their own destiny. They grasp the implications of pulling the Thread, not of using it. While Star Wars Legends included faiths like the Fallanassi, this is not new to Star Wars; this is fresh for live-action Star Wars and is interesting to see this quite different perspective presented to the tale so extensively in The Acolyte.
