Japanese PM's Dragon Ball Cosplay: Politics Meets Pop Culture

Japan's political scene just got a whole lot more interesting! Shigeru Ishiba, the country's new Prime Minister, is a big fan of Dragon Ball Z. This is well-known but the level to which he embraces Japanese pop culture makes him stand out.

A Political Cosplay

Back in April 2018, Ishiba, who was a member of parliament at the time, made a surprising appearance! He wasn't just giving a speech. Instead he showed up as Majin Buu, one of the most memorable characters in Dragon Ball Z!

This happened at the opening of the Kurayoshi Figure Museum in Kurayoshi City, which is located in his district. Ishiba was more than willing to have some fun and this moment helped to put this cosplay event in the spotlight! It appears that it was initially suggested to him by the people behind the event, but the new Prime Minister really embraced his inner geek. According to Matt Alt, an expert in Japanese pop culture, Ishiba is known for his love of building model kits and is friends with Mamoru Oshii, who is famous for the movie "Ghost in the Shell".

More Than Just A Costume

Cosplaying might get the headlines but Ishiba's performance made it truly memorable.

He went all out to look just like "Good Buu.". You might wonder why that specific Dragon Ball character? But what is so fantastic is that he highlighted Good Buu through and through, emphasizing his childlike joy. His amazing costume was also remarkable! He truly understood his character!

  • From his yellow mittens
  • His purple cape.

Ishiba brought Good Buu to life! He changed his look completely from the formality expected of elder Japanese political figures, which helped audiences appreciate his character and brought attention to how Japanese pop culture is an important aspect of this unique world. The show of Ishiba, with this kind and buoyant personality, might remind some of the playfulness and lighthearted demeanor from Majin Buu. It wasn't just the costume, but this awesome ability to really get his audience hooked! His performance was a huge hit with fans of the show!

Dragon Ball and Soft Power

If you see a politician in cosplay, you might wonder. What about American politics?

If this happened with some American politicians such as dressing up as a supervillain like The Green Goblin or the notorious Joker you can bet there would be some big negative impacts!

It looks like Ishiba understands the weight of his actions. What stands out, is that Japanese officials and politicians view this type of manga and anime in a positive light and that Dragon Ball Z is considered a form of "soft power". This means it brings out great values, history, and culture for this country that has captivated the world with all kinds of interesting series.

What's interesting, though. Is the choice to feature Dragon Ball Z out of the entire library of Japanese anime. This could have included many other series!

  • There is Astro Boy
  • Naruto
  • One Piece

Instead the creators went with Dragon Ball Z.

This decision isn't shocking though because the work done for Dragon Ball Z is absolutely unparalleled! With hundreds of potential options. This unique series captured hearts all over the globe! The fact that the Dragon Ball Z creator Akira Toriyama recently passed has only elevated the status even more!

This event, more than just the incredible cosplay, speaks volumes. It really captured audiences and Ishiba perfectly brought some light-hearted, amazing moments from his performance.

It demonstrates that politicians can embrace pop culture in interesting and unique ways that don't detract, but help bring value to a political figure, and helps spread appreciation and awareness to Japanese manga and anime!
