Based on Judith Guest's 1976 book the same name, Robert Redford's Ordinary People is directed and written by Alvin Sargent. The drama film centers on a rich Chicago suburban family whose accidental death of one son, Buck, and attempted suicide of another, Conrad, performed by Leverage actor Timothy Hutton, shakes the family. Apart from Hutton, the cast consists in Judd Hirsch, Mary Tyler Moore, and Donald Sutherland.
Among four Academy Awards Ordinary People received were Best Picture, Best Director for Robert Redford, Best Adapted Screenplay for Alvin Sargent, and Best Supporting Actor for Timothy Hutton. Hutton became the youngest recipient of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar and maintains that distinction today as he was twenty years old at the time.
The 1980 film is somewhat easily available for people who haven't seen Ordinary People or wish to view it once more after seeing Hulu's Brat Pack documentary. Though having a membership with Max, it is available to stream on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video as well as Max. Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, and Fandango at Home let Ordinary People also be rented or purchased.

The 2024 Hulu Documentary Brats brings back the glorious days when the Brat Pack—actors from coming-of- age 1980s films, mostly The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo's Fire—dominated Hollywood, including Timothy Hutton's picture Ordinary People. Though some would not classify Hutton as a member of the Brat Pack, certain lists feature more individuals than the eight main stars of the group and Hutton is connected to that larger group. Furthermore, Brats interviews Hutton about his 1980 drama film Ordinary People, hence it is reasonable to conclude that Hutton is at least an honorary Brat.
Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy (who oversaw the Hulu Documentary Brats), Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy make up the Brat Pack mostly.
Apart from Hutton, Brats on Hulu consists in interviews with Andrew McCarthy, the filmmaker of the documentary, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, and more. They remember how their careers were affected by being branded the Brat Pack—a term they detested in the 1980s. While those already participating wanted to avoid the Brat Pack, many young actors and actresses wanted to be connected with it as the Brats teaser shows. Still, Hutton's contribution to Ordinary People earned him access to the select club.
Suicide is mentioned in this page.
Several important Brat Pack alumni appear in Andrew McCarthy's Brats documentary, which begs numerous questions about why Molly Ringwald and Judd Nelson don't show. Though there are various reasons the pair might not have been featured, it's reasonable to presume they were simply too busy; however, it's clear their omission from a movie about the Brat Pack would inspire more conjecture. The absence of two of the group's most important members could reduce the value for fans to view.
Given the popularity of the Brat Pack, Hulu makes sense to have created the documentary; it's quite likely the streamer intends to release several more films emphasizing on the group's stars.

Ordinary People opened theatrically on September 19, 1980, and went both critically and commercially successfully. Critics praised Redford's efforts on his feature directing debut, Hutton's performance especially, and Sargent's horrific screenplay taken from Guest's novel. A movie office triumph, Ordinary People grossed $90 million against a $6 million budget.
Although the film was produced long before the explosion of streaming services, its popularity makes it a title that ought to be easily available for streaming. Consequently, a lot of people will be able to see the movie now and value it for its quality alone.
