Why The Magicians TV Show Surpassed the Books With a Major Relationship
Have you seen the TV show The Magicians? It's totally based on Lev Grossman's The Magicians books, but the show took a few creative liberties and changed a major relationship between two main characters for the better.
What's The Big Change?
If you've read The Magicians books you'll be shocked! In the Books, Quentin Coldwater, our main character, had this major crush on Eliot Waugh! The show changed everything and created this whole other thing, a really cool dynamic, between those two.
- The show did some super interesting character development. We started seeing this mentorship going on between Eliot and Quentin, - Quentin is a bit awkward but smart - Eliot was like a charming and cool, kind of a guide to magic at this place called Brakebills! They were super different at the start!
- It got really good, because we get to see their friendship, and it grew into them becoming more like brothers - not even in that cheesy TV way!
- They really pushed things to a different level! That amazing episode - "Life in a Day" - showed an alternate future where Eliot and Quentin, yeah, were secretly totally in love and living out a quiet and awesome love!
- But in all honesty, it's amazing to see how the showmakers went deeper into their characters! That was the kind of move the books never went for - and that's why the show was so loved! It felt more mature!
Is It Really That Big Of a Deal?
If you were one of those The Magicians fans who just couldn't get enough of it, or, were heartbroken that the TV Show ended - the ending felt abrupt! It didn't seem like a very well-done ending - there are still a ton of fan theories that really bring the The Magicians universe to life. It is really weird that the show wasn’t brought back! But there are just a ton of fan theories floating around!
So, Which Should I Check Out?
We got some great The Magicians characters on this ensemble cast. You've gotta watch it if you are into that magic world.
And honestly, Lev Grossman, the author of The Magicians, says that he really approved of all the changes, including that whole Quentin and Eliot story! And those are changes he really wished he'd made in those The Magicians books! They really have a great bond, too - in both books and shows - but those extra details, and the show's way of making the connection visual, were awesome.
- And the other cool part? That entire story - magic in a big way, adventure in those fantastical worlds, and so much more - are just super appealing! If you love the books, you're going to really love what The Magicians did! You get all the good parts and even some new amazing stories.
The show ended before Season 6 and now it's totally on Netflix and Hulu, as well. I'm pretty sure fans are all waiting for that magic and those wild, super smart, Characters!
