There are many relationship storylines throughout the 9 seasons of Scrubs. The thing is many didn't quite work out and that may have set up this beloved couple for their great run. For JD and Elliot it was just one major plot point.

In the 21st episode of Scrubs season 3, something unexpected happens! Near the end of the episode, something completely against sitcom tropes occurs! JD, who is finally getting together with Elliot, says the most unexpected line and lets Elliot know that he doesn't love her!

Why was this such a memorable subversion of the typical sitcom trope?

  • To that point, the entire series played on the classic "will they/won't they" trope!
  • It showed JD to not be so likeable, as he seemed to make a bad choice
  • He makes this statement publicly!
  • The entire season ends leaving you heartbroken

What's so compelling is that this shows that Scrubs was able to break down that old "will they/won't they" storyline. It gave viewers so many different, unique and unexpected things throughout its 9 season run. Leaving JD and Elliot together after season 3, could have killed their storylines and reduced the potential of their characters!

A great show always lets you explore your characters to their depths!

There were questions surrounding this special pairing.

  • They clearly have chemistry but had their ups and downs
  • There were also key moments throughout their relationships and as their story unfolded there were also moments where their love could not be ignored!
  • Throughout the show's long run, this dynamic kept showing how much each character really was connected

The showrunners even created relationships with others!

  • There were a few that almost could have happened for JD, which might leave some feeling they should have been together. That was something this show played around with!
  • Another chance for the fans! Elliot and Sean's relationship had a significant chance to last, but JD really got in the way!

Even though this amazing pair may never have really gotten things to the finish line! It still ended in a way that only Scrubs could pull off! To really experience what makes a well-done will they/won't they type storyline, this one has everything to keep fans wondering, getting attached to and feeling so invested in every twist, every turn! That even included this pair's tough moments that led to such an emotional resolution and helped make their union incredibly significant. It also stands out in the vast landscape of sitcom romances, bringing in a totally new depth, one that will not soon be forgotten.

However, bringing back the iconic cast members, many fans wonder if the original story can continue. After all, all the beloved characters have ended up coupled off!

So there is potential for some conflict here as it could be challenging to give us another amazing story that explores that timeless Trope!
