Fans of DC Comics and Batman are always on the lookout for new stories about this well-loved character. Recently, there was a big surprise! One of the more iconic moments got re-written to highlight Batman's strengths, but some think it just didn't make sense.
A New Take On Batman
A recent comic called Absolute Power: Origins #3 by John Ridley, Alitha Martinez, Norm Rapmund, Andrew Dalhouse, and Steve Wands showed a battle that may change everything. This wasn't some little change! There was a fight between Batman and Amanda Waller from the Suicide Squad that was drastically changed.
What makes this so remarkable is it makes Batman appear almost unstoppable in comparison to previous versions!
The Original Story
To really see just how big the change was, take a look back to see what really happened with Batman versus Amanda Waller!
This special fight occurred back in Suicide Squad #10 by John Ostrander and Luke McDonnell. It featured Batman going into Belle Reve to sneak out data from Waller. This goes as planned until it doesn't. Waller and her Suicide Squad catch up with him and surprise Batman! It turned out that Waller wasn't someone to easily take down. What she did, surprised a lot of viewers! Instead, it was Waller that used some truly surprising negotiation techniques and threatened Batman. She used his real identity as Bruce Wayne against him!
This battle highlighted just how powerful Amanda Waller truly was. This led to Batman going back empty-handed!
Why The Retcon Doesn't Work
Now take a look at Absolute Power: Origins #3 which completely changes the fight to make Batman look more powerful. This means a total re-writing and creates an event where Waller is humiliated by Batman!
But is it better? Many feel like Waller and Batman really do get a moment that makes them stand out! In the original iteration, Waller wins the fight. Even the character, Deadshot is shocked to see just what Waller did and to see how she managed to outwit Batman.
The original fight with Waller shows that Batman has limits and this shows how complex Batman can be, too!
Making Batman Look Cooler Doesn't Always Work
Batman is loved by almost everyone and there are fans around the world. However, some believe this re-write actually doesn't serve the plot and may cause more damage than not. The character Batman can certainly get the spotlight, but by re-writing some major moments, there is an overcorrection!
In the original story. Amanda Waller's dislike for superheroes came to be during these past events. Batman showing up to stop her doesn't truly take away the context! What it ultimately created was an intense, memorable confrontation that proved to highlight just how powerful Waller is! She was able to win a duel against a highly respected and skilled superhero!
Both versions have great moments but there's some real food for thought if you are hoping for a show that delivers some solid and amazing battles and shows off character strengths and unique, memorable conflicts between iconic figures in the world of DC Comics.
