Book against Show: Daenerys's Dragon Eggs
The drill is clear: "House Of The Dragon" is fantastic, but occasionally it deviates somewhat from the original source. And one of those liberties relates to the source of Daenerys Targaryen's dragon eggs. In "Game Of Thrones," Magist Illyrio Mopatis presents Daenerys three dragon eggs as a wedding present. But where from those eggs?
According to the program, Rhaena Targaryen, one of Rhaenyra Targaryen's daughters, received the eggs first as a baby. These eggs then set out a protracted and meandering path until they landed in the hands of Magister Illyrio.
The Book Canon Tells Different Story.
The truth is, though, George R. R. Martin's "Fire & Blood" presents a rather different narrative. Rhaena in the book gets three Dragon Eggs only. One of those eggs hatching becomes Morning's dragon. The book implies Syrax, Rhaenyra's dragon, produced the eggs.
This begs a great number of questions. How did Daenerys end up with three Dragon Eggs if Rhaena was handed three? And from the Vale, where Rhaena was dispatched, to the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai, where Daenerys received them, how did those eggs find their way?
Potential Reasons
There are some several theories to explain this disparity. "Fire & Blood" might not be wholly accurate. After all, history is often erratic and this is only a historical narrative.
Another view holds Elissa Farman, a woman who stole three dragon eggs from the hatcheries during King Jaehaerys I's rule. She sold them to a Sealord of Braavos, some say. Additionally there is conjecture that she arrived in Asshai. This idea holds that Dreamfyre, Helaena Targaryen's dragon, produced the eggs.
The "House of the Dragon" Twist
Though the idea of Rhaenyra's dragon being Daenerys' dragon mother is interesting, it feels a bit forced into the program. Remember also that the chronology of the show spans roughly 170 years prior to the events of "Game Of Thrones." For dragon eggs to travel and pass hands, that is plenty of time.
How the show will address the source of Daenerys' dragon eggs is yet unknown. This is an intriguing riddle that might help us to better know the Targaryen family and the past of Westeros.
