Mae's Viewpoint: "Power of Two"
"Power of Two" on Genius's lyrics on Genius make it really evident that Mae is narrating the story of this song. One phrase in the chorus especially makes it even more clear, when it describes the two being mistaken for one another, especially by name. According to reports, they experience "shame" every time this occurs, but particularly in one particular situation: when one of them is under criticism for something the other truly done. This most certainly relates to Osha being held responsible for Master Indara's murder in the first Acolyte episode.
When they shout your name, I feel ashamed; and you feel the same when they say you are to blame.
Mae's Possessive Love For Her Twin Sister The Song Expresses
Mae obviously has a possessive kind of love for her twin sister, which runs across these songs and fits her behavior in The Acolyte episode 3. It reminds me of that which Anakin Skywalker experienced for Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars prequel trilogy—something derived from a sincere love but distorted by desperation and terror. Mae tells Osha that "you're mine," therefore removing Osha's own agency in the process, not just a "necklace" that she can take on and off. Mae insists that Osha's soul is tied to her own.
You considered your soul to be a necklace / That you might wear and remove / That you could trade in the dark, that you could rip and break off / Nonetheless, you are mine.
The Last Line Has Teasers Mae's Internal Conflict True
The most amazing aspect of this song's lyrics is that Mae reveals the actual inner battle she is going through in the last sentence. She's definitely instructed as a Sith acolyte to focus on her feelings of rage, retribution, and more, but Mae is also repressing something to commit herself to the dark side. The most obvious of these is the actual, pure love Mae has for her sister and the light she sees inside her; now that she knows Osha is alive, Mae finds it more difficult.
Mae would naturally veer off her present path if it meant spending time with Osha once more.
The New Pop Song From Star Wars Sets Up A Sith Redemption
Grammy Award-winning musician Victoria Monét's new pop song "Power of Two" celebrates Star Wars: The Acolyte and explores the inner battle of one character, therefore predicting their future. The title "Power of Two" comes straight from The Acolyte episode 3, when Mother Aniseya and the Brendok witches chant using this phrase during the Ascension. With the twins Mae and Osha most certainly connected in a Force Dyad, it highlights their close relationship.
With both of the two young women believing the other to be dead until the events of The Acolyte, Monét's "Power of Two" centers on their relationship. Michael Abels (Get Out, Us, NOPE) and D'Mile produced and co-wrote this song, which honors the connection between them that will always last, even beyond death and expresses the raw passion of this friendship. However, it is even more evident whose viewpoint this is - and what their future will be - when one delves much more into the lyrics.
The third Acolyte episode exposes Mae's and her twin sister Osha's essential past and major history, including the relevance of their conception.
Set in the Star Wars world during the conclusion of the High Republic Era, the television series The Acolyte follows the Jedi and the Galactic Empire as they were most powerful. Investigating various crimes, this sci-fi thriller sees a former Padawan reunite with her former Jedi Master as they uncover events all pointing to darkness bursting from beneath the surface and ready to bring about the death of the High Republic.
