Gwendoline Christie muses over the journey of Brienne of Tarth.
Renowned for her performance as Brienne of Tarth in HBO's Game of Throne, Gwendoline Christie recently discussed how the part has affected her career. Christie debuted in the second season of the series and has subsequently starred in films like Netflix's Wednesday and The Sandman, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2. Her next endeavor will see her joining Apple TV+' Severance's second season's cast.
Arc of Brienne: A Prize Experience
Christie recently spoke with Radio Times on her performance of Brienne. She said the job is "unlike anything else" she has done and thanked the chance to perform a multifaceted and nuanced character. Christie underlined how satisfying it was to watch Brienne's arc finish following years of performance.
"I was quite, really involved in my persona, thus I paid the most attention to nothing else. There was so much to discover and I liked playing a great character with great richness. The writing is great. I adore the character George R. R. Martin developed. I enjoy the way [showrunners] David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] adapted. That was just genius, said Christie.
She then underlined the depth of the character and how Brienne "never once stopped feeding me, and I never stopped working on the character right to the very end." Christie really related to her by pointing out Brienne's smile at her knighthood. She said, "This is the time she grinned since she got the thing she wanted in a very personal and unique manner."
A Satisfying Arc in a Season Divisible by Two
Although viewers of Game Of Thrones had different opinions on the last season, Brienne's arc stayed a highlight for many. Because of the patriarchal society she lived in, the character—who had always wanted to be knighted—had social obstacles. Her constant integrity and bravery—often exceeding those of formally knighted persons—made her knighthood a very poignant event. The fact that Jaime Lannister—with whom Brienne had a complicated relationship—was the one to knight her added even more force.
Jaime and Brienne: An Intricate Relationship
Beginning as a forced match, Catelyn Stark assigned Brienne to safely bring Jaime to King's Landing in return for Sansa and Arya. Though first hostile, their friendship developed into mutual respect and even love. Jaime knighting Brienne was a striking evidence of his love and respect of her.
Though Jaime's final choice to leave Brienne in order to see Cersei Lannister disappointed, it did not diminish Brienne's journey. The occasion mostly focused on Jaime's inner struggle and character growth. With Brienne appointed Lord Commander of the Kingsguard in the series finale, her narrative came to an end on a favorable note overall. Her path came to a suitable end with this success, which also solidified her as among the most intriguing characters in the show.
Resilience and Honor: a Legacy
The narrative of Brienne of Tarth is evidence of the strength of honor, resiliency, and personal development over all. Viewers were left with a legacy from her narrative in Game Of Thrones, which also highlighted Gwendoline Christie's remarkable acting ability. Christie's performance of Brienne will surely be among the most unforgettable ones of her career as she keeps assuming fresh and interesting roles.
