What Future Does Doctor Who Know?
Davies is already looking outside the official sequence of Doctor Who, which is surprising given his great expectations for his new period. Apart from the present sequence of episodes, there have long been speculations about a variety of spin-offs set inside the universe under development at Bad Wolf, most notably a Sea Devil-centered spin-off called The War Between The Land and Sea. Davies has several long-term ideas for the main series even though the spin-off is not confirmed.
As Davies suggests in his reply, Season 16 of Doctor Who would see Gatwa heading the series once more as the Fifteenth Doctor, since each Doctor's departure had been revealed ahead of their last scenes being filmed. With Davies hinting to Ruby's story being one season 14 and 15 would fully explore, it is unclear whether Gibson or Sethu would stay with the Doctor. One previously hinted aspect that would resurface is the Meep's (Miriam Margolyes) "Boss," whom Davies verified would be a thread revisited way later down the road.
Doctor Who Update Beyond Season 15 Has RTD "Confident" About Future Of Show Despite No Official Renewal
Russell T Davies is hard at work at a possible third Ncuti Gatwa-led season and confident in the future of the show, even while Doctor Who has not yet been renewed for a new season beyond Season 15. Following its premiere in 2023's 60th-anniversary special, Gatwa's first full season features the fifteenth Time Lord incarnation joined by fresh companion Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson, for eight adventures. Following a holiday special planned to air in December 2024, both Gatwa and Gibson return in the recently filmed Doctor Who season 15 in 2025 and will be joined by Varada Sethu's new companion.
Davies told RadioTimes what viewers should expect from the series following Gatwa's second season in 2025 as Doctor Whose season 14 approaches its last quarter. The showrunner said that although the BBC and Disney had not yet decided on a Renewal beyond the first two-series deal, he stated he had taken the effort to keep penning scripts for a possible Season 16, should filming start early 2025. Look at Davies's reply below:
Ncuti went to perform The Importance of Being Earnest.
I am now working on the third season three script. Actually, it is still in development; it is not yet commissioned. That is the same, though, for every TV show. To be honest, we are quite confident; yet, since that would be begging for a fall, I shouldn't claim we are sure. We shall therefore keep on. I cannot quit; that is the problem here!
We will return once he finishes the play. We could be filming those episodes as early as next year, quite amazing. Those episodes have to be available for planning by August. And June is here. We are not behind; but, definitely all of my deadlines will strike me in the face. That is my summer wrecked, hehe!
