The Finale for Star Trek: Discovery Promoted Saru & Burnham To Set a Record
Life in Starfleet includes career advancement, but by the end of Star Trek: Discovery the series set a record for Saru and Captain Michael Burnham's promotions (Sonequa Martin-Green). Screen Rant noted to Doug Jones during our discussion that Discovery marks the first time two characters, Saru and Burnham, began their journey as Commanders and First Officers and were elevated to Captain and, ultimately, Admiral during the course of the series run. Jones said this:
As you say. In any Star Trek series before us, I doubt we have ever seen as much rank promotion across the years. For everybody. The bridge crew went from ensigns and lieutenants to commanders and lieutenant commanders, really. Real life would allow for such. People do progress, and we are supporting their doing so.
Doug Jones Finds Saru's Star Trek: Discovery Finale Promotion Surprising.
Much to Doug Jones's amazement, Ambassador Saru was elevated once more in Star Trek: Discovery's finale. In the last episode of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, "Life, Itself," Saru maries his love, President T'Rina (Tara Rosling) of Ni'Var. At the Kelpien and Vulcan's wedding are the USS Discovery crew as well as several esteemed guests. Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) addresses T'Rina "Madam President" and Saru "Admiral" as he congrats the newlyweds.
Doug Jones was surprised and confused when asked about Saru's most recent ascension to Admiral Saru in an upcoming interview with Screen Rant on the dramatic season Finale of Star Trek: Discovery. Look over his comment below:
As Doug Jones notes, promotions in *Star Trek: Discovery* came fast for the USS Discovery crew.
Ensign: From Ensign to Lieutenant, Lt. Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) became a Commander, Silvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) was promoted, and the entire USS Discovery's bridge crew ascended Starfleet's hierarchy. It's more realistic than past Star Trek shows where TV production conveniences kept characters in their ranks for years. One way *Star Trek: Discovery* distinguishes itself from earlier Star Trek programs is by elevating its Starfleet officers the manner a real military would.
