Inside Out 2 Director Says Why the Last-minute Addition of a Post-Credits Scene Was Made
Director of Inside Out 2 Kelsey Mann answers why the last-minute addition of the post-credits scene to the film was done. Though the Marvel Cinematic Universe helped popularize mid-credits and post-credits scenes, Pixar films did this well before the MCU, including a run of fake bloopers throughout the credits of 1998's A Bug's Life and 1999's Toy Story 2. With its next movies, including the post-credits scene for Inside Out 2, where Joy goes to the Secret Vault from earlier in the film and discovers Riley's Deep Dark Secret, Pixar built on this approach.
Speaking with USA Today, Mann says that the post-credit scene was added late following audience test runs. Riley's darkest secret, burning a hole in the carpeting, would have stayed a secret as would peeing in the pool—what Joy imagined the response to be. This fresh discovery drives the Deep Dark Secret to be returned into the Secret Vault. Mann explains below why the scene was finally included in the film:
Emphasizing Riley's Development and building on the moral values of the original Inside Out, Inside Out 2's emotional climax stresses
Often used by the MCU, the Post-Credits Scene has been used to directly hint at forthcoming movies or television shows—a tactic that has also been used solely for comic purposes. From collections of fake blooper clips to paying off a running joke, Pixar has a tendency of making their mid-credits and Post-Credits Scenes funnier than to build up the next project. This includes the 2013 Monsters University student slug monster who, after battling to get there throughout the whole film, at last shows up in class only to find the school year is almost ended.
Paying off the prior mystery of what Deep Dark Secret is hiding, the Post-Credits Scene follows a similar pattern, a disclosure that, although entertaining, is neither likely to be vital in a future Inside Out 3 nor fundamental to the plot of the film. Since the MCU and other studios' post-credits scenes tease people and stories that never materialize, this may be a better approach.
Why isn't Inside Out 3 directly set up in the Post-Credits Scene of Inside Out 2?
Paying off the prior mystery of what Deep Darkest Secret is hiding, a revelation that, although entertaining, is not necessary to the plot of the movie or likely to be central in a possible Inside Out 3, the post-credits scene adopts a similar style. This is maybe a better strategy because the MCU and other companies showing post-credits scenes teasing characters and unrealized stories have been causing increasing annoyance.
With Lightyear's post-credits scene revealing that Zurg lived, Pixar did this in 2022 implying his return in a sequel most certainly never happening given the poor box office performance of the movie. Inside Out 3 will almost probably happen given Inside Out 2's opening weekend box office success and the favorable critical and audience reception; a post-credits scene wasn't necessary to specifically bring it up. Inside Out 2 chronicles Riley's entering her teenage years, and a sequel can examine her and her emotions at another junctural juncture in her life.
Why Addition of the Post-Credits Scene from Inside Out 2 came at last minute?
"I always enjoyed the concept of letting viewers debate what the secret was and leaving a little intrigue with Deep Dark Secret. But the more we presented it, the more people were hungry to know what it was, explains Mann, Director of Inside Out 2.
Paying off the previous mystery of what Deep Dark Secret is hiding, a discovery that, although entertaining, is neither necessary for the plot of the movie nor likely to be vital in a possible Inside Out 3, takes a similar approach in the post-credits sequence. This could be a better approach as the post-credits scenes of other studios and the MCU have become progressively annoying since they hint to plots and persons that never materialize.
