Can You Play the "Knights of the Old Republic" (KOTOR) Games in the "Star Wars" Universe?
It might sound a little tricky, because they're officially not part of the big Disney Star Wars Canon, but they're definitely still out there in a whole different part of Star Wars history called "Star Wars Legends"!
What Is "Knights of the Old Republic" (KOTOR)
KOTOR is an awesome video game series! It takes us way back to the Old Republic era in Star Wars! The main character is this Jedi Exile who goes by the name Meetra Surik, but you, as the player, make a bunch of decisions that influence the story. You are part of the awesome story.
Why is KOTOR No Longer Canon?
When Disney took over Star Wars, it had a big Star Wars canon overhaul. A lot of cool stuff that had been around forever became Star Wars Legends. KOTOR didn’t get the Star Wars Canon approval, but those stories are still loved!
Does That Mean None Of the KOTOR Characters Are In Canon?
- That’s not totally true - we’ve still seen a lot of KOTOR characters in other Star Wars movies and shows.
- Naga Sadow is a baddie who appeared on Exegol, in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker! It was a super big moment for fans who had no idea those awesome KOTOR characters would be brought back into the Star Wars canon.
- There's also Darth Nihilus, he was featured as a scary, ancient Sith villain, back in those KOTOR games, who also popped up in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker!
Who Are Other Notable Characters?
- Meetra Surik made a comeback in The High Republic era! That's a huge change to how Disney usually does things!
- The HK-series Assassin Droids showed up in The Mandalorian! You've gotta watch the TV show!
- And don't forget Darth Revan - the main guy! He was also referenced in the new Star Wars novel called Victory's Price!
- And that crazy Mandalorian group, the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders! We got a glimpse of them in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but it wasn’t exactly like what you would see in those video games, but those Mandalorians got mentioned in a whole other way!
- Then there's Darth Sion - who is said to be one of the biggest enemies of the Jedi Order! Well, guess what, he's also a character mentioned in the new show Ahsoka!
Can I Still Experience Those KOTOR Stories?
You can still experience them! Those stories are still in Star Wars Legends - like a totally separate universe - and that’s got those awesome video games. That means we have the original games, Knights of the Old Republic. Plus, there are tons of Star Wars Legends books and comics that tell those tales! We just have to hope Disney will give us a chance to see these KOTOR Characters take center stage in a new Star Wars TV show!
Star Wars's history is super rich! So whether you are a big Star Wars fan or a brand new fan, you will want to check out these great Star Wars games!
