Mafia Wars Movie Review: Tom Welling Action Thriller Fails to Deliver

If you are a fan of action thrillers, Mafia Wars might be one to skip! It seems like Tom Welling has a new movie, one that may not bring all the excitement some would expect.

A Disappointing Action Thriller

Welling is an interesting name! He starred in Smallville. And takes on a very different type of character in Mafia Wars. However, while the name brings in some of the star power. It just doesn't work to overcome the flaws. It's a tired action movie, with some serious flaws!

  • Underdeveloped script
  • Poor Pacing
  • Mediocre supporting cast

The film starts with a plot device of Welling getting bailed out of prison! To give audiences some action he has to do an undercover mission for some shady characters to take down the Italian mob in Rome!

The Problems With Mafia Wars

It's not just one thing. Mafia Wars had issues and many may find this action thriller a disappointing and weak attempt. One thing to consider and ponder on is that it really messed up the pacing! Why does this even matter?

There are so many areas of improvement, that would easily add up and help it perform. But instead, it creates a disjointed storyline. Where everything seems added as an afterthought. With many inconsistences throughout, many may feel that this story would easily perform better with the changes to help this improve!

The later part of the movie tries to give audiences what they want- a ton of action, tension! But, there's also awkward cuts. That really slow it all down and cut any real thrills. What could have created a compelling climax, turned into something incredibly stiff, and uncomfortable. With black screen transitions from one area to the next and its many narrative flaws!

Although it isn't all bad, one bright spot is the actor, Cam Gigandet. This actor had major parts in other Hollywood blockbusters but it appears that his unique portrayal really helps him shine.

His role as Griff gives audiences a performance to enjoy!

  • Great delivery
  • Great Personality
  • Full of enthusiasm

Unfortunately this doesn't help to overcome all the faults.

Why Mafia Wars Is Not Worth It

What should have brought audiences to see Tom Welling's new project! Never made the cut!

The undercooked script! Didn't get improved and that leaves you with a finished product with low production value and lacked even basic polish! That includes some thought or effort into creating anything that viewers can watch or that gives you a feeling this would be "so bad it's good." It may have failed in its quest to get noticed as it has so many areas for improvement.

Mafia Wars is now streaming! You can view it on-demand. It’s 90 minutes long and it’s unrated. If you aren’t completely sure about what to watch for your next thriller movie, make sure you review this movie and see the other films coming out during this time. It may be a good one to add to your watch list as there may just be plenty to appreciate, if you haven't seen it yet! There are always new films and series coming out! With these movies, audiences expect something special that is both exciting, and that is a cut above the rest!
