Get ready comic fans, because Rob Liefeld is back with a vengeance, and his iconic comic book series Youngblood is getting a major relaunch!
Youngblood Revival:
After almost two decades away from his brainchild, Liefeld is returning to the world of Youngblood. He teased a return on Summer 2025! In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Liefeld dropped some exciting details about his vision and how it all fits into the world of comics!
Why Now?
Liefeld had a big plan, originally envisioning a special 30th-anniversary storyline. But that original idea didn't pan out the way the team wanted! Liefeld parked those story arcs but kept coming back to them. And as he has a ton of untold stories to work from it makes this new revival possible.
What Makes Youngblood Unique?
It's one of those things. We have had a bunch of super teams pop up in the past decades. It's not easy to make one memorable. Youngblood stands out in this world because they go live as everything occurs. If that wasn't interesting enough. Liefeld mentioned how this super team did this approach first and many fans haven't quite seen this kind of dynamic!
But Liefeld didn't only bring iconic, recognizable action. His stories made sure that even these hero characters had some deeper level that makes them truly incredible and unlike any others in the super team.
- One big feature? Body dysmorphia. A very sensitive subject to address that touches so many!
Classic Characters:
For fans who have grown up watching Youngblood. There is a major revelation from the story as Liefeld brings back this team with the core members!
- However, it's not a bunch of older versions! This will focus on core members!
- There will be new characters. This helps to ensure continuity but it is very clever how things are presented!
- Chapel is gone. But a worthy successor will show up in this series. Fans will also love how Liefeld plans to showcase some really cool characters!
Image Comics:
The Image Comics storyline couldn't have worked without some of these very key elements! It started back in 1992, which gave birth to a really iconic and unique approach. Youngblood helped launch a powerful company that transformed the face of the comics world for sure. Liefeld talks about how Image Comics almost never came into fruition! Liefeld is also known for leaving Marvel. It was really about that initial success that really pushed Image to start and it came out when the initial Youngblood made nearly 650,000 sales back then! This almost immediately brought big talent from Jim Lee and Todd McFarlane and created the biggest and most celebrated competition against other legendary comic book powerhouses like Marvel and DC! Liefeld points to his risk as being one of the factors! No kids, no family, it just was him going for it all, that resulted in amazing successes!
From Marvel To Youngblood:
Liefeld left Marvel, making sure he did this correctly! He's not bitter about what happened there! He said he did Marvel a favor! Liefeld made some memorable characters like Deadpool and even helped start an incredibly iconic character like Cable, which makes Youngblood, even better than many expect! His latest work gave him the satisfaction of finishing what he wanted, including making sure he did Deadpool the best service and ended in a perfect way! He's moved into a great new stage as he gets to pour his focus and passion into his own creations from Image Comics. Liefeld also talks about his ability and how there is some question whether he could continue this level of quality at some point! He even talked about that Marvel wanted him to continue working for them in several projects, and did give a strong temptation for Cable but there was this one very special event that came out which helped his decision making to give the work his focus!
Youngblood Future:
While there is excitement for the revival, fans have their eyes open about the success of Youngblood. What is special about the newest work? The fact that Liefeld states his commitment to an extended run for this upcoming project, that includes plenty of stories and characters to bring out.
Liefeld also shared that his latest volume may be done as consecutive miniseries. A potential new plan! But he added, he does want legacy numbers included!
Liefeld went even further and is talking with those at Image Comics. Even with his strong connection, his focus seems to be delivering these creative stories and sharing these adventures. Liefeld talks about the idea of working with others. It appears Liefeld will give these new talented artists the reigns with solo projects focusing on special members of Youngblood that will help expand this story even further!
Fans might want to pay attention. You will see the big release! Liefeld does think "big" as this will be the most significant superteam project!
There is more excitement coming from Liefeld and the fact that he made a memoir, Robservations. Which brings the whole story and long history, as the comics writer and creator, making it one to look out for. For those eager to get a dose of nostalgia! These classic versions of Youngblood and especially a "facsimile edition" will hit the shelves in April 2025 which makes the series a must have for those that grew up on these stories, bringing the whole cast and storylines into their hands!
