What happens should players join the Railroad in Fallout 4?
Basically, joining the Railroad in Fallout 4 has no instantaneous, negative repercussions. Joining all the main factions in Fallout 4 allows one to complete at least some missions for each. The primary narrative does not have a point of return, though, therefore players have to commit to one group and see its objectives all the way forward. More on that later; for now, all the player needs to know is that joining the Railroad results in only advantages. They first will have access to the Railroad's headquarters of operations in the crypt beneath the Old North Church. This boasts all the conveniences of every other faction's main headquarters: a doctor, a merchant, a bed, a brilliant quest giver, and some modest storage space.
Following their joining the Railroad, the Sole Survivor will also be able to accompany Deacon, one of Fallout 4's sixteen recruitable allies, on missions. Though he won't necessarily approve of all the player character's acts, Deacon will tag along on whatever type of employment the character has for him, not strictly Railroad-related. Having said that, the player will get the cloak and dagger perk if they raise their affinity with Deacon to the maximum level, therefore augmenting the duration of invisibility-granting Stealth Boys by forty percent and providing extra 20% sneak attack damage.
Fallout 4's Railroad of Resistance:
Like every Fallout 4 Faction, siding with any one has ramifications; the Railroad is no exception. It results in a protracted and diversified search line in which the Sole Survivor sets up safe homes, fights off Institute goons, and guides Synths around the map. There are some advantages to joining and finishing Railroad missions, but also drawbacks. The narrative will be much changed depending on the Faction the player sides with. The decisions the player character makes and the mark they wish to leave on the Commonwealth will determine whether the Railroad is truly worth joining.
Working With the Railroad Could Affect Other Fallout 4 Factions
While joining the Railroad has little effect, staying down the Railroad track will help the player avoid working with other factions. The Brotherhood of Steel is specifically at conflict with the Railroad; its members feel Synths pose a threat to humanity, while the Railroad thinks they are safe coexistence partners. Completing the Railroad quest "Underground Undercover" will make the player character a lifetime adversary of the Brotherhood of Steel. They are unable thus to fulfill Brotherhood missions or bring Paladin Danse along as a friend.
Oddly, finishing Railroad missions has nothing effect on Shaun's relationship with the Sole Survivor or their capacity for working with the Institute. The Minutemen also share generally on the issue of Synth freedom, even though they are not quite in line with all the Railroad's activities. Up to the last minutes of the main objective, the player can take their time choosing one of those three factions to ally with.

The Nuclear Chopper

Should the player see the Railroad plot all the way through to the finish, they will ultimately unlock "The Nuclear Option," the last quest. In this mission, the player must penetrate the Institute and place a nuclear weapon at its core, therefore eradicating the group and releasing all Synths for good. Apart from the Institute, any faction can execute this mission; the only aspect that truly varies is who succeeds the Commonwealth later on. After finishing the last main mission, the player will see its flags flying in Diamond City and its forces running outposts around the wasteland if they accomplish "The Nuclear Option" for the Railroad.
Should You Support The Railroad?
All Fallout 4 players should ultimately join the Railroad; there's no damage in registering, and even if they intend not to stay around, they can benefit from the early missions. Whether they carry on the Railroad quest line is based on personal inclination. It's best to stop before "Underground Undercover," if they wish to support the Brotherhood. Should they wish to ally with any other faction, one can go all the way till Fallout 4's absolute end.
