Elden Ring: Relative Map Size of Shadow of the Erdtree Against Base Game
Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree emerges as a really enormous addition after more than two years since the basic game was published, however it may come as a surprise that the DLC's map design deviates somewhat from that of the Lands Between. Elden Ring was much awaited in part because it's FromSoftware's first fully open environment, unlike the usually convoluted architecture of its other role-playing games. Though Shadow of the Erdtree feels like a real successor to the complex world of Lordran, the Legacy Dungeons feature hints of Dark Souls' level design.
Shadow of the Erdtree finds the Tarnished following in the footsteps of Kindly Miquella, child to Queen Marika, sibling to notably difficult Elden Ring boss Malenia, Blade of Miquella, and one of the more inquisitive personalities of the original game. Miquella fled the Lands Between for the Land of Shadow with an unknown mission at hand; the Tarnished starts Shadow Of The Erdtree by interacting with Miquella's cocoon at the rear of Mohg's boss room in Mohgwyn Palace. With almost the whole Land of Shadow open to them, the Tarnished develop much as they did in the Lands Between.
Shadow of the Erdtree Is Smaller, But More Compact Than Elden Ring
Shadow of the Erdtree's map looks much smaller than Elden Ring's in terms of square footage, but the bird's-eye perspective the in-game map offers is misleading. About two areas from the main game—like Limgrave (with the Weeping Peninsula) and Altus Plateau, for instance, layered on top of one another—Shadow of the Erdtree's map size is nearly similar. The second image in the gallery above is a composite of two screenshots (images three and four) from the widest possible zoom; it is impossible to see Elden Ring's whole map all at once. By contrast, one can see Shadow of the Erdtree's map in whole (picture one).
Though the map is still missing several Sites of Grace, dungeons, and other areas of interest not yet identified, all Shadow Of The Erdtree Map components have been located in the first image above.
Denser than the map of Shadow of the Erdtree is Elden Ring's
Investigating the Land of Shadow just takes a few minutes before one realizes it isn't as vast as the Lands Between. Gravesite Plain, the first location, is not as broad as Limgrave and boasts much less areas of interest; there are not as many catacombs, cavernues, or other little dungeons. But it is supported by Belurat, Tower Settlement - Shadow of the Erdtree's first Legacy Dungeon – and Castle Ensis, a somewhat large dungeon not to mention the several routes accessible for ongoing exploration of the open area.
Shadow of the Erdtree starts to feel as one continuous dungeon after some time, broken by regular, more claustrophobic areas. The easiest analogy is the game's Imp-filled catacombs, which are long, multi-level dives in Shadow of the Erdtree, rather than the brief excursions they tend to be in Elden Ring's main game; what the Land of Shadow lacks in quantity, makes up in quality. Though on a greater scale, Shadow of the Erdtree ends up feeling quite like the original Dark Souls. Though the path there is yet to be discovered, many of fascinating sites are visible in the distance, or far above and below.
Discovering the Land of Shadow: An Elden Ring Expansion Travel Guide
Built on top of itself so brilliantly, the Land of Shadow is labyrinthine on a huge scale and can lead one on a winding, hours-long trip to unanticipated locations by choosing to follow an apparently benign route. Torrent thrives as regions themselves feel like gigantic dungeons, allowing the spectral steed gallop through vast stone corridors while the Tarnished chops down adversaries. Though it is sometimes more complex and inherits the great sense of exploration of the original game, Elden Ring's shadow of the Erdtree is ultimately somewhat limited.
Though Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree does not provide clear instructions on where to proceed, the Land of Shadow is perfect first destination. Shadow of the Erdtree offers a fresh and interesting experience for even the most experienced Elden Ring players with new opponents, hard bosses, and rich, detailed landscape.
