Orphan Black: Notes on a Sequel to the Original Series
Though it deserves confirmation on how the two episodes are related, Echoes definitely has a link to the earlier Orphan Black series from 2013. Orphan Black starring Tatiana Maslany started showing on BBC America in 2013. The show created an amazing Sci-fi universe over the next five seasons whereby cloning technology is able to produce live but also begs moral issues about the nature of such actions. Though it ended in 2017, the spin-off series is much awaited and this series went on to create a cult following.
Writer Graeme Mason and director John Fawcett developed the first series; Anna Fishko developed the new series, Orphan Black: Echoes, with John Fawcett on executive production. Though the plot of the spin-off, which honors the original show, centers Clones and related technology, the deeper link between the two may not be clear right away. Fortunately, a lot of material about the new series clarifies how it relates to 2013's Orphan Black.
Orphan Black: Continues The Original Show's Sequel
Set up as a follow-up to Orphan Black, Echoes is Echoes looks at the lives of a now fully grown Kira Manning, the daughter of Sarah (Maslany), and the events of the previous Series still have great impact and significance in the current series. Viewed as an expansion to the 2013 series, the program is fully appreciated when the events of the original series set the stage for what transpires in Echoes.
But Echoes also sets enough distance from the original program to be entertaining and thorough without prior knowledge of Orphan Black and its circumstances. This is accomplished with a major time leap and a completely new cast with only one returning star for a main character. This makes it both a new stand-alone experience for fresh viewers and a follow-up for Orphan Black aficioners. Given the original Series debuted more than ten years ago, this makes the show considerably more appealing and accessible.
Echoes Set 37 Years After the End of Orphan Black
Echoes skips forward 37 years after Orphan Black's ending to investigate a brand-new narrative with a fresh set of characters. Kira has had a long and successful career as a scientist whose work in 2052 results in innovative new therapies for a range of diseases. She also found love, got married, had a child, and led a full life apart from her employment obligations.
The new series does not center the original characters, even although they are addressed and still alive. Echoes instead centers on Lucy, played by Jessica Jones star Krysten Ritter, who discovers she is a Clone and sets off a dangerous journey to find her origin and the cause for her existence. Other clones and powerful personalities show up, but the events go place with absolutely no impact from original series characters. Seeing the show as a development from the 2013 series helps one to appreciate it to the utmost.
Exist any original black orphans in Echoes?
Viewers of Orphan Black: Echoes should anticipate to see some well-known personalities making reappearance on the first ten episodes. Being the daughter of Sarah Manning, Kira's bond with the Orphan Black ensemble makes it easy to include some of the original members in little parts to assist Kira during her times of need. Keep expectations low, though, as Tatiana Maslany's key characters—Sarah, Cosima, and the other Clones—do not make returning appearances on Orphan Black: Echoes season 1.
Following the worldwide premiere of Echoes season 1, it is likely that the program will be approved to produce more seasons. Should this prove to be the case, more of the original actors could find themselves back-stage. Given the 37-year time leap, these characters are now far older and might not be able to participate in the action in the same manner as they did on Orphan Black. Either way, Orphan Black: Echoes does allow space for the program to resurrect more of the original ensemble going forward. Starring in Orphan Black, Tatiana Maslany has since starred in the She-Hulk TV series for the MCU. Previously appearing in the Marvel series Jessica Jones, Krysten Ritter now stars in the Orphan Black: Echoes series.
