Iron Man's Godzillabuster Suit Proves Tony Stark Is Up to Any Challenge
Tony Stark's Iron Man is known for having a custom suit of armor for every occasion, whether it's a raging gamma monster or the God of Symbiotes - however, few fans knew Iron Man has a suit ready to take down Godzilla. Now, as Marvel pits the King of Monsters against its biggest heroes, fans get to see Tony Stark's Godzillabuster in stunning action.
Across September, Marvel will be publishing a series of Variant Covers in association with Toho International, showing iconic Marvel heroes and villains in battle against Godzilla. The initiative is intended to celebrate the release of Godzilla #1 Facsimilie Edition and Godzilla: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus, bringing fans a new way to enjoy Doug Moench and Herb Trimpe's beloved run with the Kaiju.
But This Isn't the First Time Iron Man Has Needed Anti-Kaiju Armor
Moench and Trimpe's Godzilla comics are fondly remembered by Marvel fans, seeing the King of Monsters face off against Marvel stalwarts such as the Avengers and Defenders, as well as more obscure challengers Red Ronin (a gigantic mech) and SHIELD's Dum Dum Dugan (after Godzilla was shrunk down to the size of a mouse.) Since Marvel lost the rights to Godzilla, there have been many Kaiju to take Godzilla's place menacing humanity, prompting Tony to ready anti-Titan armor.
Tony's most famous anti-monster suit is his Model 57 Fin Fang Foombuster armor, which debuted in 2018's Tony Stark: Iron Man #1 (Dan Slott and Valerio Schiti), however, his upraded Mech Strike: Monster Hunters mech and Godkiller Mark ll were also designed with large-scale, fist-to-fist Kaiju combat in mind.
Iron Man vs Godzilla: A Battle for the Ages
Pete Woods' cover shows Iron Man battling against Godzilla, piloting a gigantic red and silver suit clearly designed for the task. With bladed knuckles and knees and a bladed head fin, Tony Stark is getting up close and personal with the King of Monsters, showcasing his inventive skill as his armor takes a direct blast of the monster's atomic breath. Other covers star Miles Morales' Spider-Man, the mutant hero Dazzler, Thor, Hulk, Deadpool and more.
Hopefully, fans will get to see a Godzilla vs Iron Man fight beyond just this variant cover, and there is reason for fans to hold onto hope. Marvel's upcoming Aliens vs Avengers is coming on the heels of a series of Variant Covers showing Earth's Mightiest Heroes tangling with Xenomorphs, and DC's recent Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong shows Toho International is willing to consider comic crossovers. For now, fans will have to make do with knowing that if Godzilla does attack the Marvel Universe, Iron Man has the perfect suit to even the odds.
