The Main Villain of Spy x Family Shows the Series Is Much Deeper Than a Comedy.
Many people rank Spy X Family as among the best comedies of recent years. Tatsuya Endo, the author of the manga, masterfully combined funny and sensible events with amazing action scenes. Benevolently hidden under all the jokes and breathtaking scenery, though, is a sad narrative that has been gradually exposed.
The recently published background of the major adversary of the series, Donovan Desmond, provides evidence of this pattern. Though yet unfinished, the brief glimpses of this merciless Villain's early life present him in a somewhat different light than what viewers are used to. Donovan was nothing more than a boy devastated by the atrocities of war before he turned into a stern and austere politician hiding terrible secrets.
The atrocities of war led Donovan to hate humanity.
Master Henderson's flashback in chapter #99 of the Spy x Family manga reveals that Donovan attended Henry's class when a little child. Donovan was austere, unaffectionate, and quiet growing child. Still, he did not seem to have the same brutal and manipulating inclinations of an adult. Desmond questioned if people could live in peace at all and looked to be deeply angry and confused with mankind. Though not stated specifically, it is strongly suggested that the terrible and violent battle waging between Westalis and Ostania helped to birth these emotions.
The future Prime Minister was hearing about the death of civilians, wounded troops, and hate directed on Westalis people nonstop during his first years living. Henderson questioned Donovan why he disagreed with the concept of world peace, and Donovan responded that he thought people were unable of such a thing. Given his life has only seen death and hate, this reaction is hardly shocking. Donovan's actual wish to keep Henderson as his teacher suggests that he was nowhere like the manipulative Villain fans know today as a child. Though he had a strange demeanor, the small child was only a child who had to grow up seeing the worst of people most of his life. Donovan became an unfeeling and manipulative man most likely from trauma. Perhaps tied to his trauma is his aim to start a fresh war between Westalis and Ostania. He wants to rule people as such as he regards them as only aggressive creatures.
War Times in the Series Has Not Made Donovan the Only Character Radicalized
Though Donovan is the most well-known instance of combat trauma in the show, he is not the only one. The military struggle between Ostania and Westalis has caused several characters to become nasty creatures like Donovan. The major enemy of the fantastic Doggy Crisis arc in the series was Keith, a young guy turned radicalized by narrow ideas of supremacy. Considering Westalis as a less developed country deserving of death for having challenged Ostania, he saw He belonged to a group of fellow college students that reflected his values.
On the other side of the spectrum, the Red Circus is a terrorist group aiming at eradicating Ostanian officials endangering peace. Their quest of peace has made them savage people who don't give a damn about who suffers as long as their goal is fulfilled. For most of their lives, both sides have been fed Propaganda or conflict, which has tormented their brains with doubt and anxiety. Though he seems to be just another person who has grown disillusioned with humanity after seeing what mankind is capable of, Donovan could be the biggest threat to peace.
The effects of war on the Spy x Family characters
Damian's father is still a very dangerous person who has to be stopped since his wounded mentality might inflict even more suffering to next generations. Still, he was not always like that since he was not the only one who turned from morality following years of war. Dark past of Loid Forger could have made him like Donovan, ready to exact retribution against those who snatched his family from him. War is always a tragedy; Endo's writings help us to understand how it affects the human mind.
A tiny portion of Donovan's past has already come to light, providing fans the understanding of what shaped him into the despotic man he is now. Still, his terrible hidden activities as well as his future ambitions for Ostania and Westalis remain to be unknown. Future Spy x Family chapters will probably provide more details on this mysterious character since Endo has lately taken the effort to enlarge the background of his successful comic.
comprehending Donovan Desmond: a Character Study
The background of Donovan Desmond gives his character greater nuance and elevates him above mere adversary. His warped viewpoint and obsessive search of power can be explained by his past trauma resulting from the atrocities of war. Though they seem illogical, his acts could be seen as a desperate attempt to regulate a planet he believes to be fundamentally chaotic and destructive.
Examining Donovan's past also begs significant issues about how conflict affects people over long terms. The show shows how the trauma of war can mold even apparently benign people into disillusioned citizens who turn to drastic means of trying to try to restore a feeling of control and order. Donovan's character reminds us of the lifelong wounds war puts on people and the need of striving for peace and understanding.
