X-Men ‘97 Didn’t Show the Heartbreaking Process of Madelyne Pryor Realizing She’s a Clone
X-Men ‘97 is beloved for a bunch of reasons, but one of the big ones was the fact that Jean Grey was replaced by a clone of herself, Madelyne Pryor. It was super wild that everyone thought Madelyne was the real deal, even Madelyne herself. The Clone was even pregnant with Scott Summers’ child! The drama of that whole story arc just got even more tragic, thanks to Marvel Comics.
The latest issue of the comic book series revealed a heartbreaking moment that wasn’t seen in the original show. It takes place at a baby shower for Scott and ‘Jean’ at the Grey family’s house, when everyone’s having a great time. Except for Wolverine, of course, who’s just moping in the corner. All of that is ruined pretty quickly when the Marauders attack. They literally blow a hole in the house and go after the X-Men, but before that happens, there’s a super emotional scene.
Madelyne Pryor’s Identity Crisis Makes Her Fall to Villainy More Believable in X-Men ‘97
Right before the Marauders crash the party, ‘Jean’ has a bit of an existential crisis. Jean’s father makes a comment about a memory from her childhood, asking if she remembers it. And she doesn’t. She admits to Storm that this kind of Memory Loss has been happening a lot lately, as if her life isn’t really her own. It's super sad to see.
Now, in the animated series, Madelyne Pryor realizes she’s a clone after the real Jean Grey comes back to the X-Mansion. But before that, she seemed like the real deal, and she actually believed that she was. But the prequel comic series shows that she started to realize she was a clone long before that. It’s pretty heartbreaking seeing that realization manifesting through memory loss. It makes her mind becoming unstable way more believable.
Why X-Men ‘97 Is Still Awesome
X-Men ‘97 is a classic for a reason! The show’s a direct continuation of the original 1990s X-Men: The Animated Series. And it brings back all the favorites, like Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, Gambit, Cyclops, Beast, Magneto, and Nightcrawler. They’re all fighting villains like Mr. Sinister, the Sentinels, and the Hellfire Club. The show picked up right where the third season left off. It was a wild ride, but the comic is giving fans even more insight into the show’s characters and storylines.
The X-Men ‘97 comic series is doing a great job of making the show’s story even better. Now, fans get to see how Madelyne’s mind was slowly falling apart for months before she learned she was a Clone. It makes her fall to villainy even more believable. The show was a classic, and the comic is adding new depth to the show's story and characters, which makes it even better! It’s cool to see the show’s storyline continuing, even all these years later. It's a huge win for X-Men ‘97 fans!
