Wonder Woman Lore Changes Forever as DC Simplifies a Crucial Element of Her Background
DC has permanently changed Wonder Woman's legacy by simplifying a critical aspect of her past. Wonder Woman's mythos has changed and grown with the times over the past 80 years; her villains are no different. Menaced Wonder Woman many times, terrifying enemies like the Cheetah and Doctor Psycho have a new background reducing many aspects of their past in Wonder Woman #10.
Tom King writes Wonder Woman #10, which Daniel Sampere draws. Wonder Woman is on Cheetah's island, which sparks conflict between the two rivals. Later, calmer heads take hold as the two chat. Starting with Priscilla Rich, the Golden Age incarnation, an invisible narrator chronicles the several women who have carried the Cheetah mantle. The second, sad Cheetah, Deborah Domaine, also gets shout-outs. The narrator then notes, though, that Barbara Minevera's craziness has no boundaries and that her forebears were "mere projections of Cheetah's true personality."
In eighty years, wonder woman and villain have changed a great deal.
Perhaps more than any other DC hero, Wonder Woman's legacy has suffered several retcons and revisions. George Perez transformed Wonder Woman's mythos significantly following the Crisis on Infinite Earths by giving venerable enemies like Cheetah fresh vitality. Originally seen in Wonder Woman #6 in 1943, the Cheetah has grown to be one of her most well-known even showing up in the live action DCEU movie Wonder Woman 1984. Perez unleashed a terrible new Cheetah variant. Once scientist Barbara Minerva, this new existence was changed into a feline monster.
Before Minerva were two more Cheetahs. Socialite Priscilla Rich, Golden Age Cheetah, was said to have "listened too often to the voice in the mirror." Rich will later be consumed by her mental health problems. Of them all, Deborah Domaine is possibly the most tragic. Wonder Woman #10's narrator, Domaine was taken against her will and turned into the Cheetah. Domaine was a decent lady who only wanted to do right, but she became a murdering machine.
Layers of the Cheetah No One Know—Not Even Wonder Woman
DC has now disclosed that these apparently different Cheetah versions are actually part of a huge legacy. Though Perez's reinvention of the character was based on mysticism and the supernatural, the issue does not go much on what "projections of the Cheetah's true personality" implies. The Cheetah had an ethereal aura from this. Now, knowing that earlier iterations of the character might really be one, it further heightens her mystery. It also helps define her as among Wonder Woman's most potent adversaries.
