Yokai Buster Murakami: An Amazingly Funny Educational Trip Through Japanese Mythology
Given Shueisha's relentless axing of manga for apparently failing to hit specific financial levels at key points, it should come as no surprise that I first quit reading Shonen Jump. Just for the publisher to pull them away, there was an oversupply of series I had become rather attached to and spent time writing about— Candy Flurry, The Hunters Guild: Red Hood, and PPPPPP. Though the recent news of Shonen Jump Editor-in-Chief Hiroyuki Nakano's leaving could mark the end of this practice, a new series called Yokai Buster Murakami might be the key to pulling me back for good.
I might have gone back to Shonen Jump just to go over the Manga Plus new vault series. Although I decided lately to read the first chapter of the new non-romance manga Yokai Buster Murakami to see if it would be worth reading in spite of the impending prospect that it would probably get canceled, you and I are total opposites since it's harder for me to resist shonen influenced by shojo. Yokai Buster Murakami is informative but with an interesting twist, hence I ended up being really impressed and decided to come back every week to read a fresh chapter. Fascinatingly, I don't feel as depressed when the relevant series eventually ranks among those who have been victimised by Shonen Jump's axing policy.
Yokai Buster Murakami teaches mythology but with added delight from satire.
Such a silly comedy like Yokai Buster Murakami reduces the charm of its characters, hence it is unlikely that they will develop on me any time soon. Surprisingly, this doesn't lessen my overall enjoyment of the series since Yokai Buster Murakami's concentration is sufficient to keep me strongly engaged for months.
Unmatched Satire of Japanese Yokai mythology, Yokai Buster Murakami deftly dissects every story, leaving nothing except its most absurd elements behind which the eponymous yokai buster then proceeds to mercilessly tear down in amazing fashion. What this exercise reveals and produces are some very simple explanations of every yokai legend. A kappa Murakami accuses of having particular affinities based on what he learns from mythology actually confirms and then fervuously embraces them, therefore supporting the premise of the series. Murakami is rightfully the real motor of the series since his merciless matter-of-fact directness and skepticism leave each yokai utterly mocked and defamed. Ironically Murakami might be the protagonist, but he isn't exactly a hero.
Yokai Buster exceeds a mere satire series?
Kuin is the one having true powers who supposedly drives out these yokai. Murakami is a coward, hence she is simply here to assist her. Kuin's major job is to accentuate Murakami's harsh comments with her clear cowardly schtick. Fascinatingly, these descriptions by themselves would seem to contradict the previously noted assertion that neither persona is very appealing.
Though much to Kuin's dismay, Kuin and Murakami thus far simply act as agents to highlight the historical elements of every yokai they come across before demolishing them. This relationship will probably alter, though, and if it's prematurely canceled, recovery will be far more difficult. For now, the educational component of the series—where I, along with other readers, will learn about each yokai like the aforementioned kappa from Japanese culture, while savoring the humorous deconstruction and brutal critique that eventually ensues—will be keeping me coming every week. "Wait... You mean to tell me that the plate on top of a kappa's skull ISN't actually a bald spot?! One Shonen Jump user observed in the responses of Yokai Buster Murakami chapter #1 expressed it best: I will therefore be..."
