The Dragon Ball franchise has given fans epic action and memorable characters for years. However, even the most legendary series can have some continuity errors. One such problem cropped up in Dragon Ball Super, concerning the ages of Goten and Trunks, two fan favorites!
A Continuity Error in Dragon Ball Super
These two Half-Saiyan boys are close in age, with Trunks being slightly older. In Dragon Ball Super, set shortly after the Buu Saga, there's a major time jump that spans much of the 10-year gap before Dragon Ball Z ends. Surprisingly, both Goten and Trunks barely age throughout this time, only dramatically changing their appearance closer to the Super Hero arc. This sudden growth is also present in the manga, but without explanation!
The Trunks and Goten Aging Mystery
By the time Dragon Ball Super starts, Trunks is already around 8, while Goten isn't too far behind, in terms of age! The series continues for a while, meaning these two young boys should already be around 14 by then. Yet, they look exactly as they did in the Buu saga, even into later arcs! The future counterpart of Trunks (Future Trunks) is much older than this though! This problem might have occurred because of the way the storylines went. They made Future Trunks older to distinguish him visually from his younger counterpart, preventing him from having more focus!
Fans wanted to see a main timeline Trunks to grow up like Future Trunks and felt that his youthful look was artificially maintained to solve a major consistency problem.
What happened in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and the corresponding manga? This issue goes away. Without explanation! The transition makes no sense and is frustrating to some fans.
A Possible Solution in Dragon Ball Daima
Enter Dragon Ball Daima. Set after the Buu Saga and possibly before Super (from early looks and previews), Daima shows the main characters with a very significant plot device: an age-reversing curse!
Every single one of these characters that appear now have a very significant effect on them! Everyone including Piccolo changes!
- Goten and Trunks go back to being infants
This unusual moment could fix this whole age problem from Dragon Ball Super! Even if the curse goes away later, as is usually expected from this style of series. It may make changes and may bring out the idea of time not necessarily impacting this younger duo the way other characters are shown! This new and fun moment gives Trunks and Goten the ability to grow all over again, easily making this make perfect sense!
Fixing Other Continuity Issues
Whether the show will deal with the Super continuity issues is another thing entirely. Daima might just be a different universe entirely. Yet, fixing the age of Trunks and Goten wouldn't impact the whole world of Dragon Ball Super.
What is particularly notable for this series though. Daima already has continuity problems from Super such as Kibito and Supreme Kai! What's a possible solution? Perhaps a curse impacting their abilities to defuse or simply bringing an earlier point of history that is different for this world!
There is some potential for clearing it up since it happened in Super! Whether Daima fixes it remains to be seen.
Daima's Potential Impact
Daima has more than just that specific plot element and it has to tell more than the age change of Trunks and Goten! Trunks has had an up-and-down reception from some Dragon Ball fans! Cleaning up these plot device errors and fixing some errors would go a long way for fans who may have not wanted to really invest themselves in Daima from the beginning.
It appears Dragon Ball seems to take continuity way more seriously over time. Let's hope Daima also embraces a well thought out storyline with very few plot holes! Only time will tell.
