The Core Cast: Sheldon and His Family

Sheldon Cooper (Iain Armitage) and Adult Sheldon (Jim Parsons)

Iain Armitage plays young Sheldon, a role taken over from Jim Parsons (the Big Bang Theory version), portraying this brilliant but seriously socially awkward kiddo. Armitage brings the young Sheldon to life – this once-in-a-generation genius! He brings that already serious passion and inclination for theoretical physics.

Outside Young Sheldon? Armitage had success elsewhere.  He’s appeared on YouTube, and in Big Little Lies, even guesting in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.   On the big screen? He did voice work in Scoob! and PAW Patrol: The Movie.

Parsons (adult Sheldon's narrator) won tons of awards (four Primetime Emmys) for his original Sheldon role, bringing that truly incredible and famous Sheldon to life!   He's been seen in several other films such as  Hidden Figures and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. Those guys were awesome!

Mary Cooper (Zoe Perry)

Zoe Perry plays Sheldon's mom, Mary Cooper; She's got a fun connection–she's Laurie Metcalf’s real-life daughter (who played Mary in The Big Bang Theory).  Mary's a devout Baptist; constantly protecting her kids; even demonstrating that incredible amount of tenderness even as she acknowledges those eccentric quirks inherent to Sheldon.

Zoe Perry is really, really talented and already famous: starting her television work in New York City, and starting way, way back in 1992.  This even includes an earlier connection with the shows featured;  playing young Jackie in Roseanne (again, that's another character where the daughter played the young version of Laurie Metcalf's character) and appeared elsewhere!

George Cooper Sr. (Lance Barber)

Lance Barber plays Sheldon's dad, George Cooper Sr.—a character that differs entirely from The Big Bang Theory's hints – making Young Sheldon a really key narrative exploration and explaining parts of Sheldon's behavior from the original TV show that could not have previously made sense without this important prequel!. The portrayal highlights those kinds of changes needed when recreating past characters into present storylines: creating nuanced additions and explanations that create strong backstories which could then better connect back into other major plot points and provide deeper explanation to character designs.

Barber's an accomplished actor with his breakout being in The Comeback, having lots of roles in iconic shows such as It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Brooklyn Nine-Nine,  He even played a younger Leonard's bully in The Big Bang Theory – making his participation and role in Young Sheldon an entirely interesting point! It creates a strong emotional connection when watching these kinds of scenes.

Georgie Cooper Jr. (Montana Jordan)

Montana Jordan plays Sheldon's older brother, George “Georgie” Cooper Jr. (who had a brief appearance before Sheldon’s wedding in The Big Bang Theory), showing his eventual success in owning a Mr. Tire dealership. He’s not like Sheldon – he’s got great business instincts and will even become a father in the show – creating another surprising arc and narrative which greatly improves and develops that story from earlier!

Jordan’s acting began early– playing a young Josh Brolin’s son (in The Legacy of Whitetail Deer Hunter),  that’s really after he appeared in Young Sheldon!    He also was a younger Georgie in The Big Bang Theory/Young Sheldon crossover.

Missy Cooper (Raegan Revord)

Raegan Revord plays Sheldon’s twin sister, Missy Cooper (again, another key member within the Cooper family); She is known for being highly emotionally intelligent (as the psychological assessments shown earlier demonstrated). In the original The Big Bang Theory storyline she's surprisingly supportive and is often extremely proud of Sheldon's achievements and these key events would ultimately make these emotional connections between the shows far more relevant and impactful than if she only remained the “bickering” sibling character mentioned frequently throughout the earlier episodes of this series.

Revord has many impressive achievements: appearing in Modern Family and Alexa & Katie.

Connie Tucker/Meemaw (Annie Potts)

Annie Potts plays Meemaw (Connie Tucker), Sheldon's grandmother and Mary's mother! She is extremely unique! In The Big Bang Theory she's that kind old lady, but in Young Sheldon? That sassy, sarcastic grandmom that actually adds significant conflict.

This incredibly accomplished actor–Potts is iconic; Janine Melnitz (in the Ghostbusters franchise, later in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire!) She also has an iconic role in Pretty in Pink and is even Bo Peep's voice in the Toy Story films.  This actress shows how vastly varied some characters in TV and Film are. Her incredible skill in conveying emotions really makes Meemaw's personality much clearer!

Mandy McAllister (Emily Osment)

Emily Osment joins as Mandy McAllister (in season 5); She’s got that key long-term relationship with Georgie – a regular character from season 6 onward! This later impacts Georgie's life – becoming the mother of his child!  Osment is awesome, well-known for several roles. You will really recognize Lilly Truscott from Hannah Montana!
