We've all been glued to the screen watching Billy Butcher's rampage in The Boys. But with Season 5 being the final curtain call, fans are buzzing about Butcher's fate. Director Catriona McKenzie, who's helming season 5, has dropped some juicy hints about what's in store for Karl Urban's character.
McKenzie sees Butcher as a microcosm of our own struggles with our inner demons. He's got the potential for brutal violence, but there's also that glimmer of humanity, those memories and connections that keep him tethered to a moral compass—sort of.
She's particularly excited to see where Eric Kripke takes Butcher's story, describing it as a battle between embracing the animalistic side and striving for a life of integrity and grace. That's a pretty big question for a character who's been steeped in vengeance and violence. We're dying to know how Kripke will weave this complex tapestry, ultimately bringing Butcher's journey to a close.
Season 4 has been a rollercoaster for Butcher. We've seen him wrestle with his thirst for revenge and his remaining humanity, especially after the revelation in episode 6 that Joe Kessler, his supposed father figure, was a figment of his imagination.
Kessler, a figment of Butcher's subconscious, represents his dark side, while Becca embodies his good side. It's a fascinating representation of the internal battle raging within Butcher. It's not entirely clear which side has gained the upper hand, leaving us on the edge of our seats.
Episode 7 throws a curveball into the mix with Butcher now possessing the Supe virus. He's determined to use it to take down Homelander, but he faces a crucial moral dilemma. Turning the virus into a weapon strong enough to destroy Homelander would also trigger a devastating pandemic, wiping out all Supes. That's a heavy price to pay, even for someone like Butcher, who's already lost so much.
With the finale just around the corner, the tension is palpable. Butcher has to decide whether his quest for vengeance outweighs the lives of his Supe allies like Starlight and Kimiko. And to make matters even more dire, his brain tumor is ticking like a time bomb, adding pressure to his mission.
We're left to speculate how Butcher's journey will end. Will he take down Homelander, only to succumb to his illness? Or will he find a way to achieve his goals while maintaining his humanity? It's a thrilling question that only the Season 5 finale can answer.
The Boys season 4 finale drops on Prime Video on July 18. We can't wait to see how it all unfolds!
