What Is Happening with The Rings of Power?
This Amazon show was HUGE when it first aired, and now the next season is almost here - season 2! Everyone loves that fantasy, but some people felt like The Rings of Power changed Tolkien's story a lot - and it looks like it’s going to keep doing so!
What is the biggest issue fans had?
- A lot of folks were disappointed that The Rings of Power - that big, new Amazon Prime Video series, was using original characters instead of sticking completely to Tolkien's Second Age story!
- It might seem confusing, but the Tolkien Estate only lets the show adapt the story found in The Lord of the Rings appendices. It does not include The Silmarillion and some of Tolkien’s earlier works! They've also said the Sauron of The Rings of Power was more inspired by the original character rather than being a totally perfect version!
- This whole show’s use of original characters has really put a spotlight on it! Fans of the story have their opinions, but that’s part of the fun, really, because there's gonna be lots of arguments! It is not just one part that people are annoyed by. Fans are also a little disappointed that some key scenes in the first season felt very "off" - which may explain why there were those major criticisms about the story! Fans of Tolkien are super excited about The Rings of Power Season 2 - because they think that is where all those major, important details and epic moments are really gonna unfold! It will be fun!
- Even the way that they've chosen to make the Harfoots (like Nori and Poppy) more present in this whole Rings of Power story is another thing that made a lot of people upset! The Harfoots are important in The Lord of the Rings and are an awesome part of Tolkien’s world - the early version of Hobbits!
What Happens Next With The Rings of Power?
Now the The Rings of Power creators are doing even more. Season 2, they're including another one of Tolkien’s pre-Hobbit groups - the Stoors, another pre-Hobbit group! This may give them a great opportunity to connect the Harfoots to the story!
- Tolkien did say that Stoors are super connected to water. He actually said that they lived near the River Anduin.
- Here’s the really controversial bit - they moved the Stoors in the series - and they now live in Rhûn! That's something from the book. It doesn't change what happened in Tolkien’s writings, it does add something super new and a bit controversial - for fans, anyway!
Do You Think It Will Get Better?
A lot of "The Rings of Power" fans think they might be setting themselves up for a big problem here! And it is something you could expect from the The Rings of Power production: it really seems that there are a ton of elements from Tolkien that are being used as jumping off points - and in doing so, they are kind of messing with what happened in the past. So they've got to really pay attention to not stepping on the toes of what Tolkien established! You can say there's always some tension! It will be exciting to watch how things will unfold!
It’s a real hot topic of discussion in the Lord of the Rings world! A lot of people have feelings. This season is looking wild as a total The Rings of Power adaptation, but also, we've got to give Amazon props because they built this incredible Second Age world, and it is pretty exciting! You know it will have that epic Tolkien fantasy story.
Get ready, folks - this epic adventure will begin on Amazon Prime Video on August 29, 2024!
And hey - what else would we expect from The Rings of Power? You gotta know that this story will be full of incredible twists, epic events, and that amazing fantasy feel that has drawn us to Tolkien’s work for decades!
