Advisory: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #4 has spoilers! The last person original Yellow Ranger Trini Kwan would have wanted to wear her suit, the newest Power Ranger member is Considering Trini's elevation to Red Ranger rank in the BOOM! Studios universe, she has shown herself to be among the most beloved Rangers in the history of the franchise.
Unfortunately, the daughter of Rita Repulsa looks to sully Trini's legacy by becoming the next Yellow Ranger in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #4 by Amy Jo Johnson, Matt Hotson, Nico Leon, Dono Sanchez-Almara, and Ed Dukeshire. Selena Repulsa meets the Power Rangers at the beginning of the series under the cover of claiming to be a relative of Trini's. Undercover enemy declares to retired Kimberly Hart she wants to be the next Power Ranger. Interestingly, Selena's words become gospel in ways that subvert Trini's initial goal once her true colors are revealed.
Years after the Power Rangers permanently killed Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd, their daughter Selena Repulsa reappears first to get retribution on behalf of her parents. She gains Kimberly Hart's trust after pilfering goods from the late Trini Kwan (including her morpher) by persuading her she is Trini's relative. Striking when the former Pink Ranger least expects it, she steals Kim's and the rest of the Rangers' morphers in an attempt to revive her mother from the Morphin Grid.
When that scheme fails, Selena Repulsa keeps her word by donning Trini's morpher to serve as the new Yellow Ranger repelling the original Power Rangers. Selena's evil aura is sufficient to change the traditional Yellow Ranger costume by including a more menacing lip plate and visor and spiked armor over the shoulders and side body parts. The most recent features of the suit combine elements from Lord Drakkon's costume with the White Dino Thunder suit. Given the backgrounds of those characters as evil Rangers, the creative team might have deliberately sought for similarities.
Trini spends her life discovering fresh approaches to be a hero, years after her time as a Power Ranger is behind her. Along with serving as the High Commissioner of Human Rights for the United Nations, the original Yellow Ranger leaves behind one last legacy in Angel Grove as its longest serving mayor before she dies. Ranger or not, Trini lived her whole life demonstrating how someone may be a hero and working to distribute natural good all throughout the world.
Conversely, Selena Repulsa is exploiting Trini's abilities for just the reverse. She is not only fighting her friends with powers that formerly belonged to Trini, but she will most definitely be using those powers for evil across the universe once she escapes the Power Rangers. Even the more canonical Trini outside of this other universe perished as a Ranger. Selena Repulsa is committed on bending the Yellow Ranger's powers to afflict the Power Rangers.
From the venerable Rita Repulsa to the more contemporary Lord Drakkon, the Power Rangers have encountered a great range of enemies. Every enemy has tested the Rangers' boundaries and pushed them to their best ability, therefore posing a different threat. Selena Repulsa, a strong new enemy with links to the past of the franchise, gives the Power Rangers universe still another level of intricacy.
Selena's relationship to her mother, Rita Repulsa, and her will to wreak havoc on the Power Rangers gives the continuous struggle an interesting fresh angle. Equipped with the pilfers of Trini Kwan, the new Yellow Ranger is sure to be a strong rival confronting the Power Rangers and demanding a fresh sense of alertness and bravery.
Strong Morphin Power Rangers: BOOM! Studios is currently having sales for The Return #4. Along with fresh characters and narratives, the show brings back the original Power Rangers. Reunited with legendary heroes and featuring gripping new antagonists, the series examines the legacy of the Power Rangers.
