Jodie Whittaker Finds The Doctor's Real Name Performatively
Onstage before a throng at Fan Expo Dallas, Jodie Whittaker, who portrayed the Thirteenth Doctor on Doctor Who, came across the Doctor's Real Name. The doctor's actual name has been a secret for decades. Though no single name has been disclosed, there have been various references of possible names. While several doctors have told friends and other show characters their actual name, as of Doctor Who season 14 the audience has never been let in on the secret.
Whittaker is shown in a video by whatawaytofall learning the name of the role onstage. During the occasion, Alex Kingston, who portrayed River Song, whispers Whittaker's ear the name. She reacts strongly, placing her face in her hands then settling down.
Could the Real Name of the Doctor be Anything?
There have been hints all through the episode regarding the Doctor's actual name. Some of the Doctor Who actors know what it is. The name might be anything from his regular alias, John Smith, to Theta Sigma, a moniker he picked at Time Lord Academy. The name might also be something that hasn't been mentioned on TV before, maybe because of its secrecy or because people find it incomprehensible. Still, it's obviously a major component of the persona and most likely a Secret known to show stars.
Although the Doctor's name appears to be kept a mystery for a reason, it is not obvious what more general goal it serves the series. The show's title, Doctor Who, suggests that the audience doesn't know the name yet as none of anybody seeing the series knows the answer. Should the protagonist's name be disclosed, the title's intended meaning would be undermined and the long-running Secret would appear more unsatisfying given it was exposed. One of the few timeless components of the play that cannot be changed is the hidden nature of it.
Looking Back at Doctor Who
Originally first shown in 1963, Doctor Who is a sci-fi show featuring the Doctor—a strong being known as a Time Lord. Traveling time and space with different companions, the Doctor uses an interdimensional time-traveling ship called the TARDIS to solve several issues and assist prevent catastrophe as much as he nearly causes. Though the Doctor is always the same character, they undergo regenerations which enables them to be recast every few seasons as a unique immortal entity with fresh personality features.
The show is well-known for its interesting characters, unique monsters, and convoluted, thrilling plot. Watching the show every week excites fans, and as more people come to know the series is certain to grow in popularity.
Why is the secret hidden?
One of the Doctors could reveal their true name at some time in the future, maybe near the climax of the episode. Given season 15 has already been confirmed, Doctor Who will most likely continue for a considerable length of time. This suggests that the name of the main character will not be disclosed for some time—perhaps in a pivotal scenario that prepares the ground for a major series event.
