Will House of the Dragon Steer Clear of the Problems Regarding the Ending of Game of Thrones?
Although the second House Of The Dragon season assessments are already rather excellent, the Game Of Thrones ending—and almost the whole last season—was famously divisive. Season 8 drew criticism for its hurried approach and for several narrative decisions. Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss exceeded Martin's source material, therefore depriving them of the author's own vision for the conclusion of this great epic. This is one element most people agree has badly impacted the final two seasons.
Martin himself has been outspoken that he felt season 10 should have seen Game of Thrones's ending and that he was mainly not consulted throughout the last seasons of the program. Although the number of seasons Martin wants House Of The Dragon to continue for is unknown, multiple elements point to the spinoff perhaps ending in a less contentious way than its predecessor. Fire & Blood has first and mainly literary form. This implies that House of the Dragon is already on page for the whole Targaryen story.
Program's Final Plan And Its Fidelity To George R.R. Martin's Book: House Of The Dragon Showrunner Talks
Showrunner Ryan Condal of House of the Dragon addresses the program's final plan and degree of fidelity to George R. R. Martin's source material. Based on Martin's Fire & Blood, the hit Game of Thrones spinoff drama launched on HBO in 2022 to follow the Targaryen civil war. Though it's unknown how many seasons it would eventually run for before ending, the program was just renewed for season 3 ahead of House of the Dragon season 2 release.
Condal talks on the ending of House of the Dragon and how closely it will follow Martin's book in a recent interview with Jonatan Blomberg from MovieZine. The showrunner claims that a strategy is in place for the ending of the production. Although Condal claims House of the Dragon will "honor" the novel, given the differences in media between the book and the program certain changes could be needed. kindly find Condal's comments below:
Dragon House: A New Season
The second season 2 teaser from House of the Dragon presents a grand view of the approaching fight. A quotation offers a hint for the ending of the program.
Condal, though, is not running low of source material for next seasons. Still, Martin seems to be more tightly linked with the writing this time around. Martin mentioned in December that he and the writing team had a fruitful brainstorming session on House of the Dragon season 3 and 4 alongside Condal. Though the ending of House of the Dragon is yet unknown, there is definitely cause for hope that the show won't be as controversial as Game of Thrones.
The House of the Dragon's End
"We have discussed that thoroughly. We can now clearly see the ending. The writing team and I... I allude to the time the curtain closes on this period in Targaryen history since, of course, the Dance of Dragons is over, but there are still another 120, 150 years of history until the Mad King is deposed by Robert Baratheon. This brings us to the first series—the real end of the Targaryen Dynasty.
"Yeah, we have considered that. I certainly want to respect what the book offers, but we also have to find a creative and unique approach to wrap things up for a large television audience. You constantly have to balance creating a television show with documented history. But I think the beauty of Fire & Blood as a whole is that another writer might follow me after this and relate a story from the past before the Dance of Dragons or shortly after. It is such a rich and deep history.
The second House of the Dragon season starts on HBO on June 16.
