Daemon's Blood & Cheese Book Change Is Even Better For House Of The Dragon's Best Future Dragon Battle
Major SPOILERS for George R. R. Martin's Fire & Blood book, on which the program is based, and House Of The Dragon season 2, episode 1 abound in this post!
An crucial modification is done to Daemon's character that sets up his most thrilling dragon fight as Blood and Cheese is ultimately adapted in House Of The Dragon season 2, episode 1. Arguably the most dreaded moment anticipated for House of the Dragon from the events described in George R. R. Martin's Fire & Blood novel was Blood and Cheese, which resulted in the cruel beheading of Aegon and Helaena's young son, Prince Jaehaerys. As the novel suggests, Daemon Targaryen hired Blood and Cheese to assassinate a "son" of the Greens in reprisal for Prince Lucerys' murder, however House of the Dragon alters the backdrop of Daemon Targaryen's initial assassination plan. Rhaenyra Targaryen says just one sentence in House of the Dragon season 2, episode 1: "I want Aemond Targaryen." Daemon responds by setting up the Gold Cloak and ratcatcher known historically as "Blood and Cheese" to get into the Red Keep and murder Aemond. Unable to locate him, they carry out their "son for a son" duty and behead Jaehaerys, Aegon's heir instead. With this book modification essentially enhancing the climactic conflict between Daemon and Aemond Targaryen, there was no hint that Daemon originally ordered Blood and Cheese to assassinate Aemond Targaryen in Fire & Blood.
Daemon Targeting Aemond in Blood and Cheese Better Sets Up Their Battle Above The Gods Eye
The drama in House of the Dragon's Blood And Cheese event highlights the conflict between the competing hot-headed Targaryens that will intensify as the series runs on revealing Daemon Targaryen truly wanted Aemond's head. Already teased in season 1 when Daemon proudly walked between Aemond and Rhaenyra's sons at Viserys' last family feast, Aemond and Daemon were each other's biggest rivals between the Targaryen Greens and Blacks. But now that Aemond and Daemon are the most powerful and erratic Targaryen fighters on both sides of the Dance, their competition moves to a more deadly and pressing level. Aemond and Daemon will keep targeting one another either in battle or for one-on-one fighting throughout the second House of the Dragon season's episodes and beyond. Daemon will finally exact retribution even though he did not kill Aemond as planned in Blood And Cheese. Still, the two won't be able to engage their ultimate duel until just before the Dance Of The Dragons ends. When this at last occurs, Daemon and Aemond will fight in the Battle Above the Gods Eye outside of Harrenhal, expected to be the most epic and strikingly beautiful dragon fight House of the Dragon will include.
Season 2 Premiere of House of the Dragon Already Features Teased Daemon & Aemond's duel
After Blood And Cheese, Fire & Blood finds Daemon and Aemond carrying their conflict to Harrenhal since both know the strategic value of occupying this Riverlands seat. Of fact, Harrenhal is the final stop of their Battle Above the Gods Eye; House of the Dragon already plans the two competing Targaryens' migration to the Riverlands. Aemond shows up for the Small Council meeting in House of the Dragon season 2, episode 1 and says they should relocate their army to the Riverlands—more especially, to Harrenhal. Daemon had already underlined, meanwhile, the need of shifting forces to Harrenhal back in House of the Dragon's season 1 finale. House of the Dragon is getting closer to the arrangement of their merciless duel as Daemon and Aemond advise Rhaenyra and Aegon's war councils to acquire Harrenhal. Though both Targaryen "second sons" are apparently heading to Harrenhal, the Battle Above the Gods Eye isn't expected to happen for quite some time.
When in House of the Dragon will the Battle Above the Gods Eye take place?
To adequately cover the Dance Of The Dragons, George R. R. Martin has said House of the Dragon would need at least four seasons. The amount of the battle the show covers with every season will determine the number of seasons, though, as will the precise ending date the show wishes. Should House of the Dragon span King Aegon III Targaryen's first few years of rule, it could require five seasons. Daemon and Aemond's fight will thus probably take place around the end of House of the Dragon season 3 or earlier in season 4 since the program won't be willing to let go of the beloved characters so quickly. House of the Dragon has already been rebuilt for season 3; HBO has not yet announced the show's future going forward.
Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and Max mark the start of fresh House of the Dragon season 2 episodes.
House of the Dragon: Examining the Targaryens' Civil War
About 172 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon chronicles the ascent of the Targaryens, the only family of dragonlords to withstand the Doom of Valyria. Milly Alcock and Emily Carey originally starred Milly Alcock and Emily Carey as Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower before Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke, who play the adult versions of the characters, took front stage. Along with King Viserys Targaryen, Matt Smith (Prince Daemon Targaryen) and Paddy Considine star Rhaenyra's father.
Examining the family's ascent to power, its inner strife, and its influence on the fate of Westeros, House of the Dragon explores the convoluted and frequently cruel history of House Targaryen. Offering a deep and captivating history to the events that preceded the events of the original series, the series is a prelude to the beloved Game of Thrones. The core conflict of the book, the terrible civil war known as the Dance Of The Dragons, sets Targaryen against Targaryen, is a gripping and sad story of ambition, treachery, and the ongoing force of familial ties.
The Battle Above the Gods Eye: An Epic Dragon Duels
The two "second sons," Aemond on Vhagar and Daemon on Caraxes, fight to the death following several years of search for the honor and power of destroying the other. The combat ends as they ride their dragons high in the heavens since both of them fall crashing down toward the sea below. Falling, Daemon leaps from Caraxes to Vhagar and impales his Valyrian steel blade Dark Sister into Aemond Targaryen's vacant eye socket. All four deadly plunge into the sea, ending two of the toughest dragons and fighters in House Targaryen's history in an explosive manner without possibility of survival.
Crucially in the Dance of the Dragons, the Battle Above the Gods Eye represents the terrible results of the Targaryen civil war. Two strong and aspirational Targaryen fighters, Daemon and Aemond, engage in a duel that stands for the collision of ideas and the terrible strength of their conflict. With the killing of both dragons and riders, the result of the battle reminds us sharply of the terrible effects of the conflict on House Targaryen and the kingdom of Westeros.
