Tough Box-Office Start of Furiosa Expained
Though *Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga* was successful in IMAX, this is hardly the whole box office picture for the movie. With an estimated budget of about $168 million, the prequel is a big sum to try and pay back. Opening to barely $26.3 million, the picture fell short of the 45 million premiere of *Mad Max: Fury Road*. *Furiosa* also created the unpleasant record of 59% second-week dropoff of any film in the *Mad Max* series. With gross income of $114.9 million worldwide, *Furiosa* has a long road ahead to turn a profit.
Although *Fury Road* in both performance and vision would be difficult to emulate, the Box Office failure of *Furiosa* makes some sense given reception of it. With a 90% Tomatometer and an equally-high 90% audience rating, *Furiosa* is getting really good reviews generally. Though the action movie has not yet been able to draw the numbers to match that critical success, those who are viewing the movie seem to be appreciating its material.
Globally IMAX theaters have found success for a Mad Max Saga.
Furiosa, a prelude to 2015's dystopian chase thriller *Mad Max: Fury Road,* chronicles the background of the character Charlize Theron popularized in the last movie. With child actor Alyla Browne in her preteen years, Anya Taylor-Joy fills in to perform the younger form of the title character. Apart from Browne and Taylor-Joy, the main ensemble comprises Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Lachy Hulme, John Howard, Charlee Fraser, and Angus Samson.
*Furiosa* has had international box office success in IMAX venues per Collider. As of right now, the movie has made $18 million in IMAX cinema receipts. It grossed $5 million in IMAX this past weekend, significantly helping to explain the $6 million overall Box Office take for IMAX. Showing the range of the worldwide IMAX triumph, one-third of the $5 million gross came from 50 screens in Japan.
The IMAX Totals of Furiosa revealed here
The disclosure of *Furiosa*'s IMAX numbers gives its otherwise dismal box-office some hopeful spin. Not only are the IMAX totals increasing *Furiosa*'s haul (15% of its total), but they also significantly excite IMAX itself globally. This IMAX focus is crucial to attract people back into cinemas in a year when theater releases have suffered. Even if *Furiosa* keeps failing at the box office, ongoing IMAX success could imply better staying power for the event film.
*Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga* is on show in theatres right now.
Regarding what is *Furiosa*?
Action-adventure picture *Furiosa* chronicles the origin tale of the headstrong and fearless Furiosa, preceding *Mad Max: Fury Road*. Set soon after the "end of the world," Furiosa is abducted and presented before a strong warlord now under orders to labor for him. Furiosa will adjust to the new hostile and dry environment as she develops into the Furiosa she is known to be in order to return home.
