Full House Star reveals Uncle Joey's last name is really a subdued joke.
Star of Full House Dave Coulier has revealed that Uncle Joey's last name, Gladstone, came from a little joke the actor himself devised. Joey is Danny Tanner's best buddy who, with Jesse, supports Danny in raising the Tanner daughters following the death of their mother. Though he has his own set of narrative arcs during the series, he is a comic trying his best to look after the kids. "Cut. It. Out." is one of Joey's several humorous gags used all through the episode.
Coulier revealed the origin of Joey's last name to be a joke in of itself while talking about his Full House Rewind rewatch podcast (via Entertainment Weekly). The actor claimed he chose the last name Gladstone, hoping to make a subdued allusion to marijuana. View Coulier's account below of how the joke became Joey's formal Last Name:
Why Joey Was Crucially Important for Full House?
Given Coulier's goals in choosing his Last Name—which also fit the character's part in the narrative— Joey's last name is a subdued joke not surprising. His profession as a comedian inside the universe matches his employment and sounds like a common last name to anyone not on the joke, thereby adding further significance to his work. It also captures his usually cheerful demeanor; his comic timing helps to offset the more somber or joyful aspects of the series.
For decades, theories have also surrounded the character—one asserting Joey is the actual father of the Tanner children. But the argument is not very convincing apart of him being blonde like them, which could have come from their mother really readily. Still, the reveal of his Last Name seems to be driving an attempt to make him even more of a figure in the narrative than he already is.
Uncle Joey's Last Name Origin
Did you know that I was able to pick my own last name? The final name my character bears. Indeed, Jeff [Franklin, the author of the series] mentioned "I'm trying to get a last name for your character," and I responded, "How about Gladstone?" He laughed and headed, "All right, sounds good."
I always thought that name was humorous. It seemed almost like, "I'm glad I'm stoned." You know, I considered it since I am a comic. Jeff laughed and that was it.
Joe's Significance
Although many Full House watchers have long assumed the Tanner girls referred to Joey as "Uncle Joey," it is only an instance of the Mandela effect. Joey's significance to the Tanner sisters would carry over into Netflix's Fuller House sequel, which showed he ended up with an own family. From having a comedy last name in Full House to being a father himself, this reveals just how far the comic has gone. This character arc makes it very evident that he was a major player in the series regardless of his last name; It also emphasizes how pertinent his persona still is, suggesting additional revelations on Coulier's podcast.
