Though it wasn't long before Shana "Scarlet" O'Hara found herself in the fight of her life against some of the deadliest ninja warriors on the earth, Scarr #1 had the main character invading the Arashikage Ninja clan to help her old friend Jinx. Storm Shadow emerged at the end of the first issue to overpower Scarlett, kidnapping her as the Arashikage prisoner. None else seemed to fit. Scarlett's espionage inspirations are reinforced by her deft handling of the razor from Scarlett #2, which is a hardy detail on the part of the creative team.
Scarlett #1 began with an homage to Goldfinger, breaking from a scuba wetsuit into more formal evening clothes when Scarlett entered a high-class party. Scarlett went for an exquisite frock instead of Sean Connery's famous white tux. Given many of creator Larry Hama's original concepts for G.I. Joe sprang from a rejected pitch from Marvel Comics for a Nick Fury, Jr. book, the espionage element seems apt. Based on the preview of Scarlett #2, it appears that she will be maintaining her counterintelligence focus in the traditional Joe continuity.
Scarlett, the iconic G.I. Joe character, is already going to extremes in her Energon Universe debut since her self-titled miniseries ratchets up the intensity of her mission greatly in their second issue. One of the most fascinating continuing projects in comics is still Skybound Entertainment's Energon Universe, and Scarlett continues to be an amazing expansion of that.
Scarlett #2 – written by Kelly Thompson, with artwork by Marco Ferrari – opens in a preview published by Skybound with its protagonist housed inside the Clan Arashikage property. Tied to a chair, Scarlett flaunts the great distances she would be ready to travel to get away. Scarlett sewed a razor blade into her abdomen before starting her current quest, as the preview pages for the issue show. Scarlett also says she put a lock-pick in her lips to assist deflect focus on the concealed razor in her stomach.
Scarlett's knowledge in espionage and intelligence was evident in several ways in the first issue of her miniseries, most notably in the secret written code created between Scarlett and Jinx, which the issue revealed only the two of them could see. Her preparedness is seen in her foresight to sew a razor blade into her skin in case she is captured and in need of an unusual escape. Scarlett is an interesting book overall since readers wait to learn what new espionage techniques Scarlett will employ in next editions.
The way each of Skybound's G.I. Joe miniseries has developed their own genre identity, suitable for the particular character highlighted, is one of their major strengths. Duke read like a man-on- the-run action movie, Cobra Commander was a full-on horror comic, and the forthcoming Destro series seems to be a political war thriller. Scarlett's occupying of the espionage and martial arts domains helps the G.I. Joe area of the Energon Universe to remain full of a broad and varied collection of influences.
