The Smallville version of Aquaman was Alan Ritchson's first acting job; the character's strong reception seemed to guarantee Ritchson would return as the star of the Aquaman TV series. But as an episode of the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast reveals, Ritchson's lack of experience most certainly had a role in his pilot recasting.
"I was not at all enraged. Why would I find myself enraged? I had done absolutely nothing; Smallville was my first job. Although Ritchson was first highly regarded for the lead role in Aquaman, he stated that the executives at UPN most likely wanted a known veteran actor for it. Justin Hartley finally got the job.
Alan Ritchson lost the chance to lead in a DC superhero TV series so early on, but his acting career took off following his Aquaman role in Smallville, particularly in more recent years. Apart from several other roles, Ritchson stars as Jack Reacher in the 2022 TV series Reacher and mostly stars in the 2024 action comedy The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Playing the half of the heroic team Hawk and Dove, Ritchson even returned to the field of Dc Comics adaptations in the TV series Titans.
Reprising the position as Hawk in the Arrowverse's Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, which combined continuities of several live-action DC TV shows, Ritchson would play Titans and the Arrowverse TV shows are finished, and the Dc Universe partial reboot for the DC Extended Universe is under progress, but Ritchson might have opportunity to return to the domain of live-action Dc Comics adaptations. Although Jason Momoa's tenure as Aquaman seems to be finished, Alan Ritchson could be cast as another legendary DC hero for the DCU.
Batman by Ben Affleck was one of the first DCU characters revealed as scheduled for a recast. Alan Ritchson may easily be among the many outstanding actors available to perhaps portray the Batman from the DCU (with Jensen Ackles being a well-known candidate). In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ritchson revealed a great passion in Batman's intelligence and wide range of technologically complex vehicles as well as a strong wish to play him. Ritchson would be the perfect fit for the part given his great performances in previous years and his desire in playing the character.
Alan Ritchson's age also counts. The Brave and the Bold has Batman slated to get his first DCU solo film alongside the Damian Wayne rendition of Robin. Danian is the fifth Robin in DC's publications, suggesting that Batman from the DCU will be a seasoned veteran having trained several sidekicks his introduction. Ritchson, 41, is the ideal age to portray an experienced Batman; casting him as one of DC's "big three" superheroes would most definitely help to offset his recasting in the Smallville Aquaman spinoff series.
Alan Ritchson was recast for the Aquaman spinoff series following his performance in the long-running TV show Smallville, a choice that looks especially bad in 2024. Aquaman, a famous DC Comics character and indispensable member of many Justice League teams, first appeared live-action in 2005 on a Smallville episode featuring Alan Ritchson. Though eventually only produced a pilot episode, Ritchson's interpretation of Aquaman became a recurring character in Smallville and a spinoff TV series was slated.
Oddly, the Aquaman pilot cast Justin Hartley as the King of the Sea instead of Alan Ritchson. Though the pilot was well-received, however, it did not result in a full Aquaman TV series. Hartley would play Green Arrow in Smallville that same year (and become a beloved reoccurring character in the series) and the Aquaman characters and mythos would not return to the realm of live-action until the DC Extended Universe film franchise finally brought the hero to cinemas, Jason Momoa playing Arthur Curry in many films, including two Aquaman solo movies.
Alred Gough, co-creator of the Aquaman pilot, experimented with the notion of establishing the program in the same reality as Smallville, but due to various obvious differences between the two, the Aquaman pilot seems to take place in its own universe.

The Superman Comic Book series, developed by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, was the model for the Superhero television series Smallville. Alfred Gough and Miles Millar developed the show. The program centers on a young Clark Kent as he travels to Earth and strives to lead a regular life while simultaneously keeping his family, loved ones, and surrounds safe thanks to his superpowers.
