Glen Powell brilliantly parodies Matthew McConaughey's illustrious performance in True Detective in Richard Linklater's Hit Man. Based on a real-life college lecturer who simultaneously worked as an undercover "assassin," Powell's character Gary Johnson adopts multiple false identities in Linklater's latest film. With a nearly perfect score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, Hit Man is already regarded as one of Richard Linklater's best films and Powell's highest-rated picture of his career thus far. Following a limited theater run starting on May 24, 2024, Hit Man debuted on Netflix on June 7, 2024.
Since its release on the massive streaming site, Hit Man has stayed at top of Netflix's Top 10 list. Combining numerous genres, Hit Man produces a well-balanced combination of classic cinema noir, action-oriented thriller, and screwball/romantic comedy. Adria Arjona, as Madison, Powell's Gary Johnson's surprise love interest, leads Hit Man's ensemble as well. Through Powell's depictions of Ron, Gary, and several other aliases, Hit Man is full of fascinating turns and deftly toy around with the idea of identity.
One of Gary's bogus identities in Hit Man seems to be modeled on Matthew McConaughey's remarkable portrayal as Rust Cohle from True Detective. Gary's rendition of the traditional Matthew McConaughey voice and speaks somewhat subtly gives the impression of paying respect to the older Rust in True Detective. The sequence takes place in Louisiana, which lends more proof to the fact that Powell and Linklater allude to McConaughey on their most recent effort.
Although McCounghey played Rust Cohle in the outstanding first season of True Detective some years ago, it is still among the most memorable performances he ever gave and one that helped start his career comeback in the 2010s. McConaughey's stellar performance in Dallas Buyers Club (2013) earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor just before True Detective season 1 debuted. Then he would go on to star in Christopher Nolan's sci-fi masterpiece Interstellar, making 2014 the most successful year of his career.
Linklater and McConaughey have a long history; their first working relationship took place almost three decades ago in 1993. Linklater basically found McConaughey after placing him in Dazed & Confused, among the best and most real coming-of-age summer films ever produced. Fascinatingly, Adria Arjona also starred in True Detective season 2, therefore creating still another link between Linklater's movie and the show. Although Powell and Linklater form a fantastic combo for Hit Man, it could also be about time Linklater and McConaughey get back together for another film.
