Luther listens to Superman's words honestly since he believes he will succeed without any doubt. One thing Luther does not count on is his being moved by what Superman says. Lex is inspired by Superman's case for a better society, thus it is tragic when humanity sides with her and Superman is quickly slain by the Kryptonite spikes. Lex then spends his life seeking to bring another Superman on Earth.
