The 'Fletch' Curse Lives On!
Confess, Fletch was a real breath of fresh air. I mean, Jon Hamm as Fletch, a character previously played by the legendary Chevy Chase? You can't ask for better! We've had this long-running Fletch curse hanging over the franchise. A bunch of attempts to bring this story back to life on the screen, and nothing really stuck - except the two original Chevy Chase Movies, that are kind of classic!
We actually thought "Confess, Fletch" broke the curse. A whole new, kind of updated Fletch film - it even got great reviews. Who wouldn't want to see that on screen? A detective like Fletch is totally cool - especially if it's played by a seasoned comedian like Jon Hamm!
A Production Hell Saga: How Confess, Fletch Finally Made it to the Screen
It's kind of wild to think about it: the Fletch project was supposed to star so many big names. A list that's crazy long. Chevy Chase again, of course, then a few other iconic guys - Ben Affleck, Will Smith! Even Jason Sudeikis at one point. They tried Fletch movie attempts like a never-ending, messed-up game of musical chairs!
The long saga of bringing Fletch back to life is kind of insane. There was this huge interest from producers over the years. The only problem was, things never seemed to align quite right. All that changed though, when Jon Hamm finally showed up and the movie world felt that we were in good hands. That "Confess, Fletch" film actually got a great reception from viewers too! Unfortunately, the release came right in the midst of the pandemic and while it definitely received great ratings, it’s almost like the film wasn't released fully - the curse is so strong!
Confess, Fletch: Rotten Tomatoes Scores Didn't Matter to the Fletch Curse!
Confess, Fletch got an awesome score, over 80% on Rotten Tomatoes - we were so optimistic! There was even this "Fletch’s Fortune" script floating around, and the director, Greg Mottola, said he was so on board for more Fletch adventures! It seems as though we're a long way from that though!
That Fletch curse was definitely back, and according to the director, he was told “No way!” when it came to another Fletch film, despite the movie already proving it had some big potential. So basically the "Fletch's Fortune" sequel was just shut down, leaving many fans questioning whether we’ll ever get a full, fulfilling “Fletch” franchise with Hamm.
More Fletch Adventures? A Story We Still Have Hope For
Is the Fletch franchise just cursed? Hopefully not. Fans who watched Confess, Fletch saw the fantastic work Jon Hamm did with that role and how much fun he brought to this incredible character. There's an opportunity there.
You know those “What if?” scenarios? The film didn't entirely crash and burn, there was a lot to love! Maybe Miramax could have a change of heart about a sequel and change their direction? Hopefully one day we’ll see more of Jon Hamm as Fletch, and I’m going to stay hopeful. This guy’s got a cool knack for bringing this kind of detective character to life on screen. Let's see what’s going on.
