Game of Thrones Star Notes the Controversial Ending of Season 8 Five Years Later
Anderson discussed the contentious ending of Season 8 in a Men's Health interview five years following the finale. Anderson expected varied reactions to the finale, but he finds it exciting when artistic creations challenge assumptions and take chances unlike others. Anderson himself found the finale to be a joyful and satisfying Ending, even if he understands why some people were unhappy with some of its elements. His entire comment is below:
"This will be some real marmite as soon as we have the scripts. People will either adore or detest this. Actually, I find that to be really thrilling. My preferred kind of material is "This shouldn't work" or "This feels risky." To just toss the rule book out the window feels a little punk. Though I can see why some people were offended by some elements, I thought it was a quite interesting way to finish things, really. The same was true when I got the email asking me to record for a TV version of the highly popular film Interview the Vampire. Though they aimed for accuracy, many "90s movies based on novels were based on fiction. I felt, before reading the script, "This sounds generic and very risky." I then perused it and thought, "Oh, this is nuts. Incredible is this. Not only is it brilliantly written, but it also feels quite adventurous and unlike anything else being produced. I appreciate such kind of material. So, when I saw the scripts for the Game of Thrones Season 8, I said, "Cool, let's go. Let's do it; hence, a small demon resides within me.
The Game of Thrones Ending Did Not Deserve the Hate It Got
Though the ending of the Game of Thrones season 8 was quite divisive, it did not merit the hate and venom it received. Though some people were worried about the storyline, the last season was nevertheless an amazing visual feast with first-rate performances and production standards. Season 8 therefore received 32 Emmy nominations, the highest ever for a single television season, and 12 awards for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Peter Dinklage.
Though not every character had a happy ending, many of the major narratives closed appropriately. Sansa Stark was crowned Queen of the North, Arya Stark sailed to explore the uncharted territories west of Westeros, and Tyrion Lannister was once more made Hand of the King. At last, all of these major characters came to terms that mirrored their travels across the play.
