Effective Fan Interactions Continue Rare
Historically, discussions on social media have been disrespectful at best and have turned into harassment, hate campaigns, or worse when fans object to the route a new creative head chooses. Wonder Woman supporters used diverse strategies, maybe inspired by Diana Prince herself. "The fans were coming at me, not in a mean way, but in the kindest, nicest way, saying 'We want to see the Wonder Girls'" Tom King remarked. Far from diminishing Wonder Woman, her protégés highlight one of her strongest suit: fighting for hope and love instead of revenge or power.
Diana has been labeled as an enemy of the United States in both the "Wonder Woman: Outlaw" and current "Sacrifice" tales, and strives to fight alone. Wonder Woman #5 by Tom King, Daniel Sampere, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles shows Diana pressuring her sidekicks to swear oaths they would not be able to assist her at all. Diana is shocked at the end of the issue to discover the Wonder Girls have decided they don't care what she wants: if she needs help, they are there for her. King wanted her alone, but Fans changed his mind.
The Important Part Wonder Woman's Family Played in "Wonder Woman's Joker's" Downfall
The Wonder Girls have captured Sargeant Steel, the military leader spearheading the Sovereign's campaign against Diana, in the just published Wonder Woman #9. Wonder Woman's strategy to approach her enemy has apparently included captivity, but it is yet unknown what Cassie, Donna, and Yara's roles with Steel entail. Diana is surviving solitary captivity while the Sovereign tries to destroy her spirit; the girls are giving Steel some payback - depicted in the previous issue trying to fire an apple off his head while blindfolded, and somehow "accidentally" missing.
One other member of Diana's family who hasn't shown up in the main narrative is Lizzie, Wonder Woman's daughter. The Sovereign has been telling someone this tale ever since issue #1, calling Diana "your mother." Is he presenting a dying man's narrative and speaking to her since he has been caught? Or is it because he has her captured? It turns out that the Amazon whose crime started his hate campaign is pregnant; is this Lizzie's real birthplace? Time will tell, but whatever transpires Wonder Woman will have her family at her side.
"Fans Were Coming at Me in the Kindest Way": Wonder Woman Writer Shows Dandom Input Doesn't Have to Be Hostile
Where authors choose to bring their beloved characters, Fans don't always agree; Wonder Woman writer Tom King shows how fans really impacted their opinion. Writer Tom King of Wonder Woman is clearly doing something right; he and illustrator Daniel Sampere just won Eisner Award nominations for their work on the currently running series. But Diana Prince's supporters helped gently shift King's perspective when they felt he had made a mistake by keeping the main character largely solo. King reunited Wonder Woman with fan-favorite characters since she is a community-oriented hero who thrives in such surroundings.
Tom King explained in an interview with Popverse that he wanted a tiny Wonder Woman cast since, in many stories, she ends up not being the protagonist in her own book. Every single issue of this book is about why Wonder Woman is amazing. Fans of Wonder Woman agreed, but they also made a passionate, polite demand of King: bring Diana's Wonder-Family back.
The Value of Teamwork
He admitted, after talking with his creative staff, "I was convinced and I was like 'I know this was Rule #1 in my bible, but I'm throwing it out.'"
