SNL fans, rejoice! We've got a big treat headed your way: a new movie chronicling the story of SNL's iconic first night back in 1975! Yeah, we're talking the night the iconic show became a legend, before "Weekend Update," "Celebrity Jeopardy", and those wild digital shorts became staples of late-night television!
This film is directed by none other than Jason Reitman - yeah, the guy behind those thoughtful hits "Up in the Air", "Juno", and "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" . Now we have to expect more than a couple of laughs, some drama, and the heart of a big story, all set against the chaotic backdrop of SNL's first night.
"Saturday Night" will tell the story of the first-ever SNL performance – but imagine, behind the scenes, what really happened as Lorne Michaels put everything together. Think the stress of the debut performance! Think those characters still finding their feet in those sketch comedy roles! Think, oh boy, think Chevy Chase! Those "Saturday Night Live" moments were iconic, but they started somewhere.
Now, we can finally see how everything came together. The trailer reveals glimpses of young Chevy Chase (that iconic smugness in full effect!) as he’s figuring out how to land a funny bit on camera, while Lorne Michaels (played by the “Fabelman's” star, Gabriel LaBelle) looks like he's about to have a nervous breakdown (just a guess based on the trailer!). I can't help but think, "Lorne is definitely channeling that iconic “Weekend Update" look, too. They just might nail this, and it’s going to be hilarious.”
The “Saturday Night" cast looks pretty stellar. The “Fabelmans” star, Gabriel LaBelle, plays the young Lorne Michaels (everyone is pretty pumped to see that). Plus, we've got Cooper Hoffman as Dick Ebersol (who was an important part of the early days of SNL)! The story includes some behind-the-scenes drama – a new SNL writer, played by Rachel Sennott (so ready for some of her comedy!) is facing pressure as she navigates the world of those late-night comedy writers! Plus, it shows how important those “Saturday Night Live” moments are for the legacy of a television show that keeps on going strong.
To add to the "can’t-wait-to-see-it" vibe, "Saturday Night" also includes actors like Nicholas Braun from "Succession" (oh, boy! That's already going to be some interesting dynamic!) , Matthew Rhys from "The Americans", and Dylan O’Brien from "Teen Wolf". A stacked cast. You just know those guys will bring it, because “Saturday Night Live” is more than just a comedy show - it’s a real cultural force! We’ll get to see those early-day icons (we’re looking at you, Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd!) with some new energy in these familiar roles. It's pretty cool to see "Saturday Night" going back to the beginnings of SNL, and you just know, this will give us all a behind-the-scenes perspective on how those crazy SNL personalities shaped those comedy skits! It'll be amazing to see how those iconic stars became icons.
