Shrek 5: Release Date, Cast, Story - DreamWorks' Ogre is Back!

Get ready for some serious nostalgia because Shrek 5 is finally happening! After a super long wait, the beloved ogre is back for another adventure in Far, Far Away!

Mark your calendars for July 1, 2026! That's when Shrek 5 is hitting theaters. Dreamworks Animation announced the date a while back, in a video teasing the return of the original voice cast. It's pretty exciting that it's landing in a great spot to become a summer blockbuster.

Of course, with so much time between announcements, things can change! We've seen it with other big Movies, even though the early July date is a good starting point and probably won't change very much.

The Return of the Main Cast

Huge news for fans! The main trio is back. Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Fiona) have all signed on. Eddie Murphy, especially has really hyped this new movie. We aren't so surprised about Myers though, considering just how pumped he seemed about these potential sequels.

Cameron Diaz is also back in the spotlight! She's been mostly retired from acting but decided to come out of "retirement" to reprise Fiona. Big props to Diaz and DreamWorks to make it all come together!

As for the rest? We expect the original Puss in Boots voice actor, Antonio Banderas, to return as well, but it isn’t officially confirmed, yet. There’ll probably be some new faces, along with some beloved familiar fairytale sidekicks who are always stirring the pot for the Shrek crew. A Gingerbread Man or Pinocchio appearance is totally plausible, if the movie continues with some recurring characters from the past movies!

The details are a bit scarce about Shrek 5's actual plot, even after many script updates over the years. Things are going to get crazy in Far, Far Away because Shrek and Fiona seem super settled down at the start of this adventure! The duo's storyline in Shrek 4 ended with them happily married. We could really see something completely unique, however!

They could focus on Shrek and Fiona's kids who will likely be teenagers by now. This allows the story to open up many exciting possibilities about growing up and relationships changing.

Shrek 5: A Long Time Coming

It’s been over a decade since the last Shrek movie, Shrek Forever After, in 2010. The wait seems crazy, though. It almost felt impossible!

Shrek first burst onto the scene back in 2001! At the time, this DreamWorks creation changed animated movies! Its awesome mix of adult humor, charming fairytale themes, and totally fresh character designs gave fans an instant hit, even making its soundtrack iconic! What stands out about this film is its popularity. Even after making sequels Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek The Third (2007), and Shrek Forever After (2010), they seem to have some really big questions for fans as these new releases approach. With a new story potentially focusing on this beloved character and family, it looks like the studio is going to bring together everything we loved!

While it has been in development for a while now, the movie coming out may just make Shrek 5 one of the coolest moments, that has had fans guessing, thinking this wouldn’t come to life. Even if there are some delays in the midst, fans' excitement only grew with the major success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish back in 2022, making the upcoming Shrek 5, the best Shrek installment yet.
