Remaking Possession is hardly logical as it is such a singular cinematic creation. The movie's atmosphere, lead actors' performances, and Żuławski's amazing cinematic aesthetic take front stage rather than the story or characters they occupy. Extensively modernizing those latter components from the 1980s horror film would not always produce a film with a strong enough hook to capture any significant public interest.
Pattinson's instincts as an actor, however, would suggest that this movie is going beyond a surface-level replica. Pattinson's reputation with genre films finds him collaborating with original filmmakers with singular visions, despite his best-known blockbuster appearances in projects including Twilight and The Batman. This covers collaborating with David Cronenberg on the mystery drama Maps to the Stars, the Safdie Brothers on the thriller Good Time, Claire Denis on the sci-fi excursion High Life, and Robert Eggers on the horror film The Lighthouse.
Robert Pattinson, the Batman and Tenet star, is collaborating in a new remake of a 1981 horror film with a sizable cult following. Possession is about to undergo a makeover. Renowned Polish director Andrzej Żuławski produced the first 1981 cult horror film. Starring future Jurassic Park actor Sam Neill and five-time César Award winner Isabelle Adjani, it chronicles the strange fallout Anna (Adjani) asks her husband Mark (Neill) for a divorce. With an 83% Rotten Tomatoes score, 1981's Possession has been celebrated in numerous ways in the decades since its premiere, including ranking on the Sight & Sound list of The Greatest Films of All Time, tying for No. 243 as of 2022.
A Possession Remake is under development with Smile's Parker Finn onboard for production, writing, and direction according to The Hollywood Reporter. Though the celebrity could show in the film once the cast is determined down the line and his availability can be negotiated, Robert Pattinson is working with Finn as a producer only. Companies including A24, Warner Bros., and Netflix showing interest are fueling a bidding war for the movie.
Pattinson's next film, the Bong Joon-ho sci-fi drama Mickey 17, sees him down the same road. The star's unwavering dedication to the weird and the strange is what these different Robert Pattinson films share. His almost invisible voice performance in the English dub of Miyazaki Hayao's most recent animated film The Boy and the Heron also revealed this inclination. Possession might approach the topic with enough of an off-kilter variation to adequately commemorate the acclaimed original film if it can live up to the standards set by past Pattinson-led genre flicks.
