Jake Gyllenhaal Possibly Reunited With Guy Ritchie For Road House 2
There is a perfect replacement thanks to Jake Gyllenhaal's career should Doug Liman not return for Road House 2.
Road House 2 Might Not Materialize Under Doug Liman
Original director Doug Liman might not be able to lead Road House 2, but Jake Gyllenhaal provides a perfect substitute. Together, Doug Liman and Jake Gyllenhaal created the Road House reboot for 2024, which Prime Video found to be a streaming phenomenon. It was not surprising then when rumors surfaced about Road House 2 under development and Jake Gyllenhaal scheduled to return as Dalton. The sequel cannot take place without the lead character and star returning; sadly, this is not always the case for the director.
Doug Liman was clearly instrumental in ensuring Road House's success, but his comeback has been questioned even before the sequel was announced. There are numerous public and behind-the-scenes reasons the director might not come back. Doug Liman updated Road House 2's development by stating he'd "hate to leave [Jake Gyllenhaal] hanging," but he also mentioned he had never done a sequel before. Other Gyllenhaal films offer a great substitute for Doug Liman should the sequel proceed under the direction of another director.
Jake Gyllenhaal Should Reconite With Guy Ritchie For Road House 2
If Road House 2 needs a director who can match Doug Liman's comic and action sensibilities, it will not be easy to replace him; but, Guy Ritchie could be the best choice. This is partly because Guy Ritchie and Jake Gyllenhaal already have a working relationship. They collaborated first on The Covenant, a war-rescue film. Now set to feature in Guy Ritchie's next film, In The Grey, Jake Gyllenhaal reflects just how much they loved working together prior. Therefore, the franchise star could bring a familiar face aboard Road House 2 should a director be needed.
Beyond the background between Jake Gyllenhaal and Guy Ritchie, one could easily picture the director working in the Road House Movies' accepted tone. Whether we're discussing earlier films like Snatch or more recent ones like The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Guy Ritchie movies often have plenty of outstanding action scenes and are quite funny. Either with or without Doug Liman, a Road House sequel will most definitely want to copy what made the first movie so successful. Should this be the case, Guy Ritchie has the means to accomplish it.
Why Doug Liman Might Not Come Back for Road House 2
We are only discussing replacing Doug Liman for Road House 2 because his return looks at best dubious. Prime Video's initial announcement of the sequel left no indication of Doug Liman returning. This followed the director's many public remarks expressing his annoyance with Amazon MGM about the way Road House was distributed. Doug Liman was shocked to find out the movie was being moved to streaming when he had anticipated a theatrical release.
This prompted Doug Liman to declare he would refuse to attend the Road House premiere, which he subsequently did. Regarding the boycott's reaction, Jake Gyllenhaal said in reference to the movie's release schedule "Amazon was always clear that it was streaming". This hasn't stopped Doug Liman from being outspoken about his dismay over the way Road House's distribution was handled. Moreover, Road House 2 is not confirmed for a theatrical release, thus the director most likely won't sign up for the sequel should a streaming release be expected once more.
Guy Ritchie's calendar might keep him too busy to make Jake Gyllenhaal's Road House 2
If Doug Liman doesn't return, Guy Ritchie could be the ideal fit for Road House 2; but, timing will ultimately determine whether this is indeed the case. Typical of sequels Doug Liman develops, Amazon MGM and Prime Video will not want the sequel to take years off the ground. Guy Ritchie is likely to be too busy, though, if the studios wish the film to premiere in the next year or so. He's still finishing his and Jake Gyllenhaal's film In The Grey and getting ready to create his new Young Sherlock TV series too.
Apart from the forthcoming films Fountain of Youth and Disney's live-action Hercules, these initiatives are supposed to be Guy Ritchie's top focus for the next foreseeable future. Road House 2's director would be expected to be involved rather early on even if it takes more time than anticipated to gather a screenplay. Guy Ritchie constantly has fresh films and shows under development to pass his time. Though Road House 2 would be the ideal project for him, he might simply lack free time to create it.
