Scarlett #1 Honors Action Movie Heroes Like 007.
Every influence mentioned for the new Scarlett series sounds as though the miniseries would be an all-out action spectacular. Many of them are evident in the Scarlett #1 preview, which has the main character breaking into a lavish party. Scarlett begins her own series in much the same manner as Sean Connery, pulling off his wetsuit to expose a tux under in the beginning of Goldfinger, instead sporting a tasteful dress under her dive gear. It's a welcome return to a historic event that highlights how deftly the creative crew is leveraging these inspirations.
"Every influence mentioned for the new Scarlett series sounds like the miniseries will be an all-out action extravaganza." Thompson's past performance on Black Widow revealed his talent for espionage thrills. Scarlett should be a spy action series par excellence, adding some high-octane set-pieces to the Energon Universe in line with Ferrari's aggressive attitude. The G.I. Joe franchise usually shows a group of highly skilled professionals completing challenging tasks, therefore the impact of Mission Impossible might be felt in the team aspect of the show. Fans also know that Storm Shadow and the Arashikage clan will be part of the upcoming series; the action hopefully draws inspiration from the martial arts-laden gunplay of the John Wick franchise.
Bond, John Wick & New G.I. Joe Series Influences Are On-Point
With the just finished Duke and Cobra Commander miniseries, the Energon Universe era of G.I. Joe began strong. Writer Kelly Thompson previously shared some of her action blockbuster inspirations in building the new miniseries, and Scarlett #1 seems to keep the good times flowing for the Joe franchise.
Posted on Skybound's Instagram page, Kelly Thompson notes the action films that motivated her during Scarlett series screenplay development. "Well, I think when it was an outline and script I would have used a Bond movie, or maybe a Mission: Impossible as comparable," Thompson notes. Thompson says Scarlett artist Marco Ferrari then added his own inspirations to the narrative, invoking a contemporary classic of action movies: "I think Marco's style brings an energy and a little bit of controlled chaos that makes the book feel a bit more like John Wick in a super fun way."
Scarlett's influences are on point from John Wick to Mission: Impossible.
Though Cobra Commander was practically a horror film and Duke told a traditional "man-on- the-run," it's good that every G.I. Joe miniserie Skybound offers has its own distinct character. The G.I. Joe sector of the Energon Universe keeps developing in fascinating ways while the Destro series looks to be a study of world war politics. Hopefully Skybound has another success with the newest G.I. Joe title in the Energon Universe, Scarlett drawing on many action movie masterpieces.
Skybound Entertainment will have Scarlett #1 available June 5.
