Get Your Cowboy Boots Ready: Must-See Western Film Sequels
While there have been a ton of awesome western Movies out there, the genre isn't always known for churning out super fantastic sequels. Maybe it's because outlaws and cowboys often meet a sticky end, or the originals were based on real stories. But luckily, there are some seriously amazing Western movie sequels out there. And these aren't just "okay" – they're like a good steak, perfectly cooked and ready for a second helping.
Get ready for gunslingers with heart of gold, classic heroes doing epic things, and villains who are even more badass than you thought possible.
Western Movie List: Ready To Saddle Up?
For A Few Dollars More (1965)
Speaking of a good second helping, For A Few Dollars More is like a perfect sequel. It keeps the gritty action of the first Dollars movie (aka A Fistful of Dollars) but adds in a whole lot more with Lee Van Cleef alongside Clint Eastwood. Think of it as a cowboy team-up. And seriously, Ennio Morricone's score makes you want to just get out there and start riding!
This is a perfect example of a classic western sequel that totally delivers. The original had good tension, but this takes it to a whole new level!
Deadwood: The Movie (2019)
Remember Deadwood, that HBO show that everybody loved (until it was suddenly canceled)? This movie is like a happy ending we never thought we'd get. You see all the folks you loved in that wild, lawless town. Plus, this movie delivers a satisfying ending we've been waiting for. So, yeah, definitely catch up with this Western film sequel! But be warned - you’ll have to binge the TV series first.
If you're looking for great Western Movies with sequels that feel fresh and full of heart, Deadwood is definitely a top contender.
Trinity Is Still My Name (1971)
Sometimes a little comedy goes a long way in the Wild West, and that's exactly what Trinity Is Still My Name delivers. These movies, along with the third one Sons of Trinity – make a pretty incredible western series. Get ready for laughs and lots of shootouts.
And who doesn’t love some good old-fashioned Italian-style western comedies?
Rooster Cogburn (1975)
There are a lot of iconic cowboys out there, but John Wayne is probably top of the list, right? And you can’t get more iconic than that gruff, one-eyed lawman, Rooster Cogburn. He’s from True Grit. But wait, there’s more! This is another sequel that's like "that" comfy old sweater you keep coming back to. You’ve got that signature Wayne swagger, plus Katherine Hepburn too, which is like a whole new level of awesomeness.
Looking for good western movie sequels with serious swagger? This is it!
Back to the Future Part III (1990)
We're branching out a bit here. Back To The Future Part III is not exactly a western sequel, but let's face it: it's just a seriously great movie with a Western spin on the classic series! With the Time Traveler Duo, Marty and Doc, headed way back to the old days, you’ve got lots of laughs, classic Western movie vibes, and maybe a little too much nostalgia, which really is part of what makes it so awesome.
So even if it's a little outside the typical western sequels, it's still a must-see.
Adiós, Sabata (1970)
While it might be a little surprising to see Sabata get a western sequel, the guy was definitely the hero for a reason! The thing is, Adiós, Sabata features Yul Brynner, taking the place of Lee Van Cleef! So if you’re ready to see a new face and a different take on this character – be sure to check it out! It’s another one with great action scenes, funny situations, and even a cool plot, as long as you don’t overthink the changing cast… it's a pretty fun ride!
If you’re looking for great western movies with sequels, you’ve gotta add Sabata’s saga to your watchlist.
Django Strikes Again (1987)
Some guys just stick with a hero's role. Django is one of those! It’s cool to see Franco Nero return as this character after so long. Plus, this movie brings an even cooler vibe. This is Django finding himself in new, strange situations – so expect that good ol’ Django style to come through. You also might wanna keep in mind that Quentin Tarantino did an amazing tribute to the original in the modern classic, Django Unchained (although Tarantino’s take is really its own beast).
A Western sequel that keeps the good times rolling.
The Return Of A Man Called Horse (1976)
What’s more captivating than the story of a guy learning about native tribes in the Wild West? Getting to see the same guy a couple of years later when he actually is a full-fledged member! This sequel, The Return Of A Man Called Horse does a really great job. It keeps things spiritual, and shows off that awesome Western action – especially because the tribes are dealing with some serious threats to their land.
One of the best Western movie sequels if you’re a fan of the strong stories.
Return Of The Seven (1966)
Okay, here's a fact: The Magnificent Seven is just about the best Western film ever. And Return Of The Seven isn’t exactly on that level…but it’s still pretty great! And there’s good reason. It features Yul Brynner, who has one of the coolest looks ever in Western cinema. So this sequel is pretty amazing for giving him his own time to shine and take charge!
Plus, those bad guys – they definitely need taking down! Get ready to watch a whole new batch of those bandits try to get taken down by these cowboys!
Looking for great western movies with sequels, Return Of The Seven is definitely a classic!
The Lone Ranger And The Lost City Of Gold (1958)
We gotta go back to some old-school classic TV Westerns for this one, but this is still totally relevant! So here’s the thing: the Lone Ranger had a huge TV show, then he went to the movies, and… The Lone Ranger And The Lost City of Gold happened! Now that was some big-budget stuff for that era, and for a whole lot of moviegoers, it really launched the legend.
Looking for some vintage goodness when it comes to Western sequels, The Lone Ranger is always worth another look.

What To Watch For In A Great Western Sequel
These days, Hollywood loves to keep rehashing and remixing the same stuff. But you know what? Some movies are just timeless classics. A great western film sequel shouldn't feel like a lazy remake - it should take everything good about the original and turn up the heat (like on a good, juicy steak!).
So how can you spot an awesome Western Sequel? Keep an eye out for:
- Building On The Original Story - It's not about the exact plot repeating - it’s about taking a compelling setting and using it to explore new things.
- Expanding The Characters - We want to see more depth and a whole new level of adventure when it comes to our heroes. It’s about letting characters truly flourish.
- Even Better Action! - Great action sequences just have to keep getting better – the way the shootouts are filmed, the tricks that are used, and even the music just keeps getting pumped up.
- Twists We Don’t Expect - Just because the setting is the Wild West doesn't mean that every movie needs the exact same kind of story - and it's better when we get something fresh and exciting.
